Following the bull sale at Carlisle on Friday 15th June was an official British Limousin Cattle Society Breeders’ sale which featured a strong line-up of females, full of quality of and breeding, from eight vendors in all.  Purchasers, both pedigree and commercial, featured from the length and breadth of the UK and from all four home countries.

Leading a terrific trade at 9,800gns was a cow and calf from Messrs J Logan, Humebyres, Kelso.  This consignment was the first offering from the noted Homebyres herd of breeding cows in calf with calves at foot.  Sold as separate lots, the April 2008 born Homebyres Dinuette made 6200gns followed by her heifer calf, Homebyres Howlett, who made 3600gns.  Both were purchased by James Tennant Ltd, Manor House Farm, Fraisthorpe, Bridlington, East Yorkshire for the pedigree Lissett herd.  The April 2008 born Homebyres Dinuette is a Homebyres Vanhee daughter out of Homebyres Starlette and has a high beef value of LM+41.  Her third calf at foot, the August 2012 born Homebyres Howlette, is a Wilodge Tonka daughter.  Homebyres Dinuette was sold PD’d in-calf.

The same purchasers did it again when buying Homebyres Effi with her heifer calf at foot, Homebyres Hiffi, for a combined 9,300gns.   Again the two lots were sold separately with Homebyres Effi making 4800gns and her calf, immediately following, making 4500gns.  The April 2009 born Effi is another daughter of the Balnacraig sired Homebyres Vanhee and is out of the Homebyres Homer sired Homebyres Tansi.  Homebyres Hiffi, Effi’s second calf, is sired by Haltcliffe Eubank.  Again PD’d in-calf, Homebyres Effi had a beef value of LM+31.

The cow and calf unit of the 2009 born Homebyres Ellie and her second calf, the bull calf Homebyres Hatrick, made 7800gns.  Again sold separately, Homebyres Ellie was purchased for 5000gns by Robert Neill & Partners, Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire for their establishing pedigree herd.  Homebyres Ellie is again by Homebyres Vanhee and is out of Homebyres Ainslie whose dam line goes back to Broadmeadows Dainsi.  Homebyres Hatrick, sired by the 12,000gns Haltcliffe Eubank, was snapped up for 2800gns by F & S A Edmondson, Netherhouses Farm, Broughton Beck Ulverston, Cumbria.

For their ten cows served and or suckling, the Logans averaged a mighty £6384.

A quality line-up of heifers from local breeders Eric and Elaine Norman, Little Orton Farm, Little Orton met with an excellent trade that saw a top price of 8,800gns.  Featuring within the offering were daughters from Claragh Franco, the herd’s stock bull which was purchased for 24,000gns in May 2011.

Leading the way at 8,800gns was Norman Halo, a Claragh Franco daughter from one of the herd’s top cows Stacey Rosetta, a Dyfri Maestro daughter.  April 2012 born, Norman Halo stayed local when purchased by local breeder Jim Mulholland, Great Orton for his Liscon pedigree herd.

A genuine Production Sale from the herd, these were the first females offered from Claragh Franco who had served over 100 cows in the herd in 2012.

Robert Aitken, StrauthieBridge, Easter Balrymonth, St. Andrews, made 6,200gns when selling the first calver Lourie Finessa.  A Rocky daughter out of the Ronick Hawk sired Lourie Vessa, Lourie Finessa was sold with her November 2012 born Ionesco sired bull calf, Lourie Havana, at foot.  Purchaser was MW Jack, Carriston Farm, Glenrothes who runs the Kingdom pedigree herd.  From their consignment of five cows, the Aitkens also made 4000gns respectively for the Ronick Hawk daughters Lourie Vessa, and Lourie Charisma.

At 5800gns was another cow and calf outfit from Messrs Logan.  Homebyres Elki made 4000gns when selling to the Greatargoed pedigree herd of CH Higgs, Little Bank Farmhouse, Church Stoke, Montgomery, Powys.  Elki is by Homebyres Consort, a Cloughhead Umpire daughter and is out of Homebyres Bainsi, another from the Broadmeadows Dainsi line.  She was sold PD’d in-calf.  Her heifer calf at foot Homebyres Hankie, a Homebyres Arnott daughter, was sold for 1800gns to the Widdrington herd of H Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm, Widdrington, Morpeth, Northumberland.

The run of good prices for the Homebyres herd continued with the sale of Homebyres Eileen with her bull calf at foot for 5600gns.  This unit was another purchased by JF & MB Teague, TempleHouse, Buteland Farm, Balerno, Edinburgh.  April 2009 born, Homebyres Eileen is fully homebred being by Homebyres Arnott and out of the Balnacraig Supreme daughter Homebyres Venner.  The bull calf Homebyres Haggert, Eileen’s second calf, is another by Haltcliffe Eubank and is October 2012 born.

The Norman herd sold 16 maiden heifers in all to average £3701.  Continuing their run at 5500gns was Norman Helen.  Another Claragh Franco heifer, Norman Helen is out of the Dyfri Maestro heifer Stacey Rowena.  Buying this March 2012 heifer was JS Gibson & Son, ThorntonTowers, Newbrough, Hexham, Northumberland.  A few lots later the same buyer paid 4400gns for Norman Hiphop.  This April 2012 born heifer featured the combination of being sired by Claragh Franco and being out of the Heathmount Trojan daughter Norman Camelia.
