Gorrycam Hunter from Stephen Reel, Cullyhanna, Newry, Co Down made 28,000gns and led the trade at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s October Sale held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Saturday 19th October 2013.

This July 2012-born bull, who had placed Reserve Junior Champion in the pre-sale show, was purchased by the Dutch breeding company Cowporation, 3 Hertzweg, Alblasserdam, Holland. Gorrycam Hunter, who has a Beef Value of LM+35, is an embryo calf by the noted sire Cloughhead Umpire and is out of the Sympa-sired Gorrycam Dolly. In July 2013, this bull had stood Bull Champion in the Northern Ireland Junior Limousin Championships held within Antrim Show. For Stephen Reel this was his highest price to date at Carlisle and surpassed the 26,000gns previously received for the same-way-bred Gorrycam Hazzard in May 2012.

Earlier in the sale, Cowporation had also purchased the Senior Champion and Reserve Overall, Withersdale Heros, from DC & SR Wharton, Willow Farm, Mendham, Suffolk, for 17,000gns. This bull, Male Champion at the Royal Norfolk Show, is an AI calf by Sympa and is out of the Wilodge Vantastic-sired Withersdale Didi who stems from one of the herd’s foundation females, Calrossie Orticia. The pre-sale show Judge was Mr Michael Cursiter who runs the Lagas Herd at Laga Farms Ltd, Arwick, Evie, Orkney who described him as: “A very well-put-together bull, very thick with a tremendous back-end and an excellent set of feet.” For the father-and-son partnership of Derek & Darren Wharton, this was the first bull brought to a Carlisle sale from their 14-cow herd which was established in 1996. At the 2013 National Limousin Show, the homebred Withersdale Empress had stood Overall Reserve Champion.

In all, four bulls were sold for export with two bulls going to new buyers from Denmark. The sale overall saw 76 bulls sell for an average of £6,322 which was up by £14 on last year with the sale seeing a 66% clearance. Ten bulls in all made 10,000gns or over.

The second highest priced bull in the sale was the 19,000gns Crossdykes Hercules from James Common & Son, Crossdykes Farm, Lockerbie. This bull had stood second in his class to the day’s top priced bull. Crossdykes Hercules is by Culnagechan Bullseye and is out of the homebred Crossdykes Celia. With a Beef Value of LM+43, he is a full brother to the 18,000gns Crossdykes Goliath sold at the corresponding sale in 2012. Purchasing this June 2012-born bull was the joint partnership of Neil Barclay, Harestone, Aberdeenshire; and Balfour Baillie, Tankerness, Orkney.

Securing a final bid of 13,500gns was the junior bull, Garyvaughan Haines, brought out by CV & EM Lewis & Sons, Buttington New Hall, Buttington, Welshpool. This May 2012-bull is by the 35,000gns Plumtree Deus, and is out of the Haltcliffe Bruce-sired Garyvaughan Elaine. Purchaser was G Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharrade, Argyll.

At the 12,500gns mark was the Overall Champion, Emslies Horny, when going under the hammer to the Killerton Herd of PW & SM Greed, Columbjohn Farm, Ltd, Rewe, Exeter and purchased for his easy-calving, growthy bloodlines backed up by a good set of figures for the 130-cow herd. Described by the Judge as “a modern and stylish bull with very good muscling, conformation and mobility,” Emslies Horny is fully homebred, being by Emslies Colossus (Objat x Ballymoney Noisette – dam of the 2009 Royal Welsh Champion Ballymoney Veronica), and out Emslies Erotic, a daughter of Hartsideanew Argos and out of the 2001-born Heathlands Sweetheart, one of the first purchases for the Emslies prefix, and still breeding in the herd. This represented the first Carlisle Championship for the 90-strong Emslies Herd, following a Junior Championship and a Reserve Overall Championship previously. The previous lot, Emslies Hunter, had sold to R & J Johnston, Hewan, Shapinsay, Orkney for 7,000gns to complete a good day’s trading.

Two bulls in all realised final bids of 12,000gns. The first of these was the second prize-winning bull, Culnagechan Hawkeye, from Mr D Hume, Magherafelt Road, Randalstown, N Ireland. April 2012-born, he is by the Wilodge Vantastic son, Carmorn Copilot, and is out of the Spage Master-sired Ardbrack Revedenuit making him full brother to the 13,000gns Reserve Intermediate Champion Culnagechan Fantastic, Carlisle February 2012. He now heads to the Livet Herd of Mr S Duncan, Achdregnie, Glenlivet, Ballindalloch.

At the same money was the Junior Champion Maraiscote Hiphop from Mr J Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Newmains, Wishaw, Lanark which continued a good run of Carlisle Championships in recent years for the 120-cow herd. Having taken the Junior Male & Overall Male Champion at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, Maraiscote Hiphop is by Goldies Comet and is out of the second calver, Maraiscote Disco, a Virginia Andy daughter. Buyers were J & F Hartley & Sons, Low Shipley Farm, Hamsterley, Bishop Auckland for their Lowshipley pedigree herd.

For the second year running, the Maraiscote team took the Carlisle Three Award for the best pen of three performance-recorded, homebred bulls. These were all Goldies Comet sons and all out of Virginia Andy daughters: Hiphop 12,000gns LM+42; Hawk 11,500gns LM+46; and Harrier 8,000gns LM+40. The 11,500gns Maraiscote Hawk, who had won a second prize ticket at this year’s Royal Highland Show, sold to JC Innes & Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly, Aberdeen. RA Patterson & Son, White House, Capheaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne purchased the 8,000gns Maraiscote Harrier. Overall, Ian Nimmo’s string of six bulls averaged £7,927.

The first prize-winning bull in the penultimate junior class, Ampertaine Hallmark was snapped up for 11,000gns when consigned by Mr J McKay, Kilrea Road, Maghera, Co Derry. A Sympa son and out of the Stockdales Muscular-sired Ampertaine Sandy, Hallmark is three-quarter brother to the noted 29,000gns Ampertaine Abracadabra, and carries easy-calving, growthy bloodlines backed up by the appropriate EBV figures. May 2012-born, he now heads to McArthur Bros, Mid Fleenas, Nairn.

Another Northern Irish-bred bull, Titchburn Heros from Donal Murray, Ballinarea Road, Cullyhanna, Newry, Co Down also made 11,000gns when knocked down to an undisclosed buyer. An embryo calf, this red ticket-winning senior bull is by the 50,000gns Wilodge Cerberus and is out of the Irish-bred Mas Du Clo daughter, Barnattin Vera.

James Alexander, Gloverstown Road, Randalstown, Co Antrim purchased Sarkley Herald for 9,800gns from Messrs EH Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Montgomery, Powys for his commercial enterprise. Got by AI by the French-bred Objat son, Etudiant, this April 2012-born bull is out of the Heros daughter, Sarkley Riona and carries a Beef Value of LM+30 and a Muscle Depth EBV of +4.7 putting him in the top 10% of recorded Limousins.

Knock Black Handyman, a red-coated bull carrying black genetics, went under the hammer for 9,500gns. He is by the Queenshead Altea son, Baileys Finalest, and is out of Knock Dolly, dam of the 18,000gns Knock Black Glencoe who went on to win the Male Championship at the 2013 Royal Welsh Show. Purchasing this April 2012-born bull with a Beef Value of LM+39 were commercial producers GH Walton & Sons, Greyside Farm, Newbrough, Hexham.

The first bull catalogued, the five-year-old senior herd sire Ampertaine Commander, who was offered for sale only, made 9,500gns to get proceedings off to a flying start. Sired by Glenrock Ventura and out of the Sympa daughter, Ampertaine Arabella, he was consigned by Mr W Barron, Burnhope, Durham. Bred by James McKay, N Ireland he had been purchased for 20,000gns by Mr Barron at the 2009 May sale at Carlisle where he had stood Supreme Champion. He was purchased by H & S Watkins, Cammen Uchaf, Llanfihangel, Powys.

The Reserve Intermediate Champion, Middledale Hendrix, from Mr PR Byas, Middledale Farm, Kilham, Driffield, E Yorks realised 9,000gns when secured by Mr W Laing, Lower Gaich, Grantown on Spey, Morayshire. One of the first sons to be offered for sale by Scorboro Enigma (by Objat), this April 2012-born bull is out of Middledale Topgirl.

Another bull at 9,000gns was the second prizewinner, Goldies Hawk, from Mr BT Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries. Sired by Wilodge Cerberus and out of the Ampertaine Bravo daughter, Goldies Dove, whose first son Goldies Grandprix sold for 8,500gns, he sold with a Beef Value of LM+43 to CG Simpson & Sons, Square House Farm, Quebec, Co Durham.

Realising a bid of 8,000gns was the third prize-winning bull, Spittalton Hero, from J Burnett & Sons, Upper Spittalton, Blairdrummond, Stirling. By the Wilodge Vantastic son, Spittalton Denzil, and out of the Orme B-sired Spittalton Tiggy, he was bought by T & J Leslie, Quoymore House, Balfour, Orkney. He carried a Beef Value of LM+24 and a Calving Value of LM+1C.
