Club Report 2008
The South East Limousin Cattle Club started the year with the AGM, held on the 6th February 2008 at the ‘Old Eden’ in Edenbridge
The Chairman and Secretary for 2007, John Reynolds and Karen Whiting, continued in the same roles for 2008, along with Roger Brown as Treasurer to the Club.
Our usual herd competitions in 2008 went ahead with the Pedigree Limousin Herd Competition and for the fifth consecutive year, our successful Commercial Herd Competition which attracts a wide range of entries from within the South East area.
The Pedigree Competition was kindly judged this year by Colin Hutchings from Kingsbrompton Farm, Somerset, who thoroughly enjoyed his few days with the SELCC members.
The overall winning herd in 2008 receiving the Chris Lomas Memorial Plate for the 2nd year in a row was Buriton Estates. Colin was impressed with by the size and power of the cows and in general thought they were big without being coarse.
The Reserve Herd, again for the second year went to Brian Baker with the Wealden Herd, whose cows Colin noted had size that was passed on to the calves.
The Commercial Competition was kindly judged by Mike & Jean Dickens who both have many years’ experience showing and judging pedigree and commercial cattle. With 13 herds this year to judge for the South East Limousin Club, they had many miles to travel! We were really pleased with the entries this year and look forward to topping that in 2009!
Mike & Jean placed in Reserve ATD & SR Clutterbuck who run a small herd of only 9 cows with a bull from the Thorndean herd. Both Andy & Sian are new to the SELCC and we hope to see them at future events. In the Champion position this year was Stratton Farms, based near Reading.
Applesham Farm was the venue for the 2008 Herd Competition Awards evening in October, with a farm walk and BBQ for the members, hosted by Chris Passmore, we enjoyed a very windswept tractor ride around the farm, followed by a delicious BBQ afterwards. The Club would like to thank Chris & his family for their hospitality and the very interesting talk Chris gave about the origins of his importing of Limousin cattle from as far back as the 1970’s.
Thank you to all the herds that took part in the competitions, we look forward to your entries in 2009!
The show season went well for the South East this year with the Kent County Show again a success for the South East Limousin Cattle Club, being well supported by the members. Sue Watson had a great show with Thorndean Breakdancer being part of the Limousin team that won the Doubleday Trophy for best Group of Four. They also won the Commercial Beef Heifer class with the February 2007 born Cheeky, who went on to be Reserve Champion Commercial, and Thorndean Cracker took a 1st in the maiden heifer born in 2007 class.
Once again, the South East Limousin Cattle Club would like to say a big thank you to all the members and committee for all their hard work during the year, and we hope that you all have a successful 2009.
