The six-year-old cow Clarkton Anita at 7000gns topped the Dispersal Sale of the Clarkton Pedigree Limousin herd, on behalf of Jim & Ruth Mitchell, Clarkton Farm, Doune, Perthshire, and held at United Auction’s Stirling Market on Saturday 24th September 2011. The Dispersal Sale was held due to the considered decision taken by the Mitchells to retire.
This noted herd was established in 1987 and in the subsequent years met with considerable success in both the sale ring and the show ring. Perhaps most notably this included being the breeder of the 2003 Royal Highland Show Limousin Champion, Clarkton Noble. Fittingly, the Dispersal Sale met with an excellent trade throughout underpinned by pedigree breeders and also with a commercial undertone.
Clarkton Anita, the day’s sale topper, is by the herd’s stock sire Dyfri Tanner and is out of Clarkton Tina whose pedigree features Mereside Jackie one of the herd’s most influential females. Dyfri Tanner, a Jockey son, was purchased jointly for 16,000gns at Carlisle in February 2004 along with Andrew Burnett, Upper Spittalton Farm,Stirling. Clarkton Anita was sold with her fourth calf at foot, the March 2011 born bull Clarkton Geri who is sired by Glassick Diego. Purchaser of the top price, and seven lots in all at the sale, was R&N Barclay, Harestone, Crathes, Banchory who runs the pedigree Harestone herd. Other purchases by Mr. Barclay included the seven-year-old Clarkton Via at 4000gns with her Glassick Duke born heifer calf at foot, Clarkton Glory; Glassick Duke himself (a Knock Atlas son) at 3600gns; and Clarkton Vogue, the seven-year-old Orme B daughter sold with her Glassick Diego sired bull calf at foot, Clarkton Glen, at 3500gns.
At 6200gns was the first-calver Clarkton Deirdre. March 2008 born Clarkton Deirdre is by the herd’s French bred stock bull Orme B and is out of Clarkton Angelina. Again Angelina’s pedigree includes Mereside Jackie and also notably Uplands Bluebell, the original foundation cow in the herd who lived until 19 years of age and produced a remarkable 23 progeny including 7 embryo calves. Clarkton Deirdre was sold with her February 2011 born bull calf at foot, Clarkton Grant who is by another Glassic bull, Glassic Duke. This outfit went to Northern Ireland when selling to JN Martin, 69 Banbridge Road, Dromara, Dromore and his Ashmara pedigree herd.
At 5200gns was the cow Clarkton Ainsi whose pedigree again included both Uplands Bluebell and Mereside Jackie. Entirely homebred, Ainsi is by the Marron sired Clarkton Sirocco and is out of Clarkton Tansy, an Orme B daughter. May 2005 born Clarkton Ainsi was sold with her Glassic Diego sired heifer calf at foot, Clarkton Goldie, who is March 2011 born. The purchaser was Rod Lines, Killocraw, Bellochantuy, By Campbelltown, Argyll who has the Killocraw pedigree herd.
Glassick Diego, purchased privately in February 2010 along with Glassick Duke, featured as the sire of the calves at foot of both the top price and third top prices on the day. This proven breeding saw him lead the six bulls sold when he made 4500gns. April 2008 born, Glassic Diego was bred by Mr A W Dunn, Glassic Farm, Braco, Nr Dunblane, Perthshire. He is by Knock Atlas and is out of the Clarkton Jupiter sired Glassick Opal. The buyer of Glassick Diego was D&J Thomson,WestPark, Aberfeldy.
Two animals made 4200gns. The first of these was the May 2005 born cow with bull calf at foot, Clarkton Angelina. Clarkton Angelina is another by Clarkton Sirocco and is out of the 1994 born Mereside Jackie. Her May born bull calf, Clarkton Gallant, is sired by Glassick Duke. Heading to Ayrshire, this outfit was bought by M R Mair, The Hill Farm, Cumnock. Also at 4200gns was the Dyfri Tanner sired cow Clarkton Britney. Born in November 2006, Britney is out of Clarkton Trisha and was sold with her third calf at foot, the April born heifer calf Clarkton Gracious by Glassick Diego. Clarkton Britney joins the Ballinloan pedigree herd of AC Fotheringham, Ballinloan, Dunkeld, Perthshire.
Another notable purchaser on the day was J Innes & Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly, Aberdeenshire who bought ten maiden heifers in all through the sale.
