Wilodge Eyecandy from Christine Williams made 9,000gns and led the British Limousin Cattle Society Breeders’ Sale held on Friday 4th July at Harrison & Hetherington’s Borderway Mart, Carlisle. The January 2009-born Eyecandy is by the Mas Du Clo son Milbrook Tanko and is out of the herd’s famous cow Ravenelle. She was sold with her heifer calf at foot Wilodge Icandy, a Wilodge Fastrac November 2013-born daughter. Purchasing the top price was Kedzlie Farm Ltd, Blainsie, Lauderdale for their Swalesmoor pedigree herd.
The Wilodge consignment, offering some top-quality and proven bloodlines from this high achieving and noted herd, pulled in a big crowd of new and established breeders. At the close of the sale, 13 Wilodge cows, served and/or with calves at foot averaged a fine £6,663.
This Limousin breeders’ sale saw consignments from the Grahams, Whinfellpark, Wilodge, Eves and Barrons herds respectively. Fifteen lots/outfits in all made 5,000gns or more with the sale grossing £203,350 for the lots sold. The Whinfellpark offering topped at 8,000gns whilst the lead price from the Grahams consignment was 7,000gns.
Wilodge Exotic made 6,500gns when selling to the Harestone herd of Mr NR Barclay, South Road, Insch, Aberdeenshire. The May 2009-born Exotic is the first daughter to be offered at sale from the famous Wilodge Vantastic’s full sister, WilodgeVavanelle, whose progeny have sold up to £30,000. Sired by Rocky, Wilodge Exotic was sold in-calf to Crossdykes Goliath. Purchasing Exotic’s Wilodge Fastrac-sired heifer calf, Wilodge Islandgirl, at 2,100gns was TP Atkinson, Meadow View, Ulverston, Cumbria.
The cow and calf outfit of Wilodge Eyewitness and her bull calf Wilodge Iwitness made a combined 8,200gns. Wilodge Eyewitness at 6,000gns was another purchase for Kedzlie Farm Ltd. 2009-born, this embryo calf is by Ronick Gains, a half-brother to Broadmeadows Cannon, and is another out of Ravenelle. Purchasing what is her second calf, the Haltcliffe Doctor-sired Wilodge Iwitness, at 2,200gns was Mr A Lumsdon, Greengate Well Farm, Brampton, Cumbria for his Sandedge prefix.
The Banbury-based herd of Smiths of Bloxham, Newlands Farm, Bloxham, were back in action as buyers and snapped up the seven-year-old Wilodge Crystal. Again full of breeding, Wilodge Crystal is a full sister to the 50,000gns Wilodge Cerberus. By the prolific Wilodge Tonka, Crystal is out of the Cannon-sired daughter Wilodge Priceless. She was sold in-calf to Gerrygullinane Glen. Purchasing her heifer calf at foot Wilodge Ingot, by Wilodge Enrico, was P Darlington, Spring Farm, Crewe, Cheshire, for 2,000gns. The same purchasers also picked up Wilodge Coblahdi, another seven-year-old cow, along with her bull calf at foot for 5,000gns. Wilodge Coblahdi is by the French-bred sire Toubib and is out of the Oxygene-sired Wilodge Soblahdi. Her January 2014-born bull calf at foot, Wilodge Jeeves, is sired by Wilodge FM.
The outfit of Wilodge Dixiechick and her bull calf Wilodge Ifive made a combined 7,600gns. The six-year-old Dixiechick, a Wilodge Vantastic daughter and out of Smithston Trixie made 3,600gns and was another purchased by Mr NR Barclay, South Road, Insch, Aberdeenshire. Purchasing Wilodge Ifive, an AI son of Bial, for 4,000gns was the Allerby pedigree herd of Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Allerby, Aspatria, Wigton.
In an imaginative piece of marketing, Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Clifton, Penrith, offered the pick of the 2013-born heifers sired by the world record priced 120,000gns bull Dolcorsllwyn Fabio from their Whinfellpark herd. This special offering saw bidding quickly rise to 8,000gns with the pick of the heifers being secured by Boden & Davies Ltd for their Sportsmans Herd based at Mellor Hall Farms, Mellor, Stockport. The twenty-eight lots on offer from the Whinfellpark herd saw an overall gross of £51,660 realised.
Leading the consignment from R & J Graham, Airthrey Kerse Dairy Farm, Bridge Of Allan, Stirling was the French-bred stock bull Frankyben who made 7,000gns. 2010-born, this bull is by Achille, by the well-known Sauvignon, and is out of Bettyben whose maternal grand sire is Panda. Not yet four-years-old, this bull with size and muscle was another lot purchased by the Allerby herd of Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Allerby, Aspatria, Wigton.
Grahams Holly, catalogued as the first red homozygous polled Limousin female to sell in the UK, made 5,750gns when purchased by Messrs Boyling & White, Crabwell Farm, Mollington, Chester for their Crabwell pedigree herd. Grahams Holly, a heifer’s calf, is by the German-bred bull Tigris and is out of Fougue, a daughter of Bagou.
The second lot in the ring from the Grahams offering, Greenwell Eden, made 5,000gns when selling to the Newton herd of Colin T Taylor & Son, South Walton Farm, Newton Mearns, Glasgow. Bred by JT Nattress, Greenwell Farm, Lanchester, this five-year-old cow is by Vagabond and is out of the Ronick Member-sired Greenwell Ultra. PD’d in-calf to Galeo, Greenwell Eden was sold with her September 2013-born Goldies Forever-sired heifer calf at foot, Grahams Black Impulsive.
