On the 21st October, the Autumn sale of bulls at United Auctions hosted an exceptional show and sale, showcasing the exceptional genetics and remarkable qualities of Limousin cattle. Judged by the esteemed Walter Cruickshank, the event brought together a vibrant community of dedicated breeders and buyers, all united by a shared passion for excellence in the breed.

Allanfauld USA

A selective day’s trading saw 38 bulls sell to a top of 12,000gns for Allanfauld USA, bred by Mr A MacGregor, Kilsyth, who describes USA as a powerful quality bull and judge Walter Cruickshank agreed tapping him out as reserve intermediate champion and first in his class. This April 23 born bull is by the herd’s sire Milbrook Playboy, a son of Milbrook Gingerspice who claimed the three straight titles at Balmoral show in 2014 and is sired by the prolific 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic. Lotted as number 455, USA, out of Allanfauld Poet, and is off to work for Messrs Eunson, Deerness, Orkney.

Goldies Uncle

Closely following was lot number 445 Goldies Uncle who was bided to a price of 11,000gns. Carrying a red rosette for first place, the March 2023 born Uncle, carries double F94L myostatin genes and is in the top 1% of the breed for beef value (LM59), growth and muscle depth. This well combined bull is by Woodmarsh Regent and out of homebred cow Goldies Pam. Pam is a Goldies Harmony daughter whose son Goldies Relish claimed reserve champion at Carlisle in May 2022 and sold to the Brockhurst herd for 30,000gns. Uncle was bred and exhibited by Bruce Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries and Galloway, who sold this bull to William Thomson and Son, Hilton of Beath, Fife.

Judge Walter Cruickshank

The judge for the day was Walter Cruickshank, Clury, Dulnain bridge, Inverness, who carried a wealth of knowledge. Walter runs his family farm along with his wife Dawn, father pat and son Kyle. The 750-acre upland farm is near to the Cairngorms National Park and has very wet peat and clay soils adding to the challenges of farming. They run 120 cows, with about 50 being pedigree under the Clury prefix which was established in 1996. They hope to sell 10-15 bulls a year from the farm and sell Limousin or British Blue calves at 6–14-month-old.

Joining Walter in the ring was Ruby Simpson, who enjoys helping her parents and brothers run a busy hill suckler farm, Mains of Creuchies, Blairgowrie. Ruby is passionate about showing and stockjudging so the opportunity to shadow Walter was invaluable.

Next up was Grant Morrison’s senior champion bull Newtack Turbo, lotted as number 402 and born in September 2022. He is speeding from Grange, Keith, to live with Messrs J and J Pattullo, Kirriemuir, Angus. Turbo is sired by Plumtree Fantastic, who has bred a wealth of top priced progeny to 28,000gns. He is out of Emslies Fifi, bred by Harry Emslie, Kinkickie, Mintlaw, she interjects French breeding into Turbos bloodlines with her great grand sires including both Objat and Rocky. Turbo has an F94L and a Q204X myostatin status.Lot 427 Glenrock Upstanding sold for 8,500gns and carries a double F94L myostatin gene. He is bred by Stephen and Thomas Illingworth, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, and sold to Messrs McDiarmid, Lawers, Aberfeldy. Upstanding has impressive EBVs putting him in the top 1% for age to slaughter and top 10% for carcase weight and gestation length. This February 2023 born bull impressed judge Walter as he picked him for first prize in the first intermediate class of the day, and then went on to awardthe intermediate champion and reserve overall champion accolades to him as well.

Newtack Turbo

The second bull to be sold under the hammer for 8,500gns was lot 470 Maraiscote Urbane from Ian Nimmo’s consignment fromNewmains, Wishaw. Ian sold this double F94L carrying bull to Islay Estates, Bridgend, Isle of Islay. Urbane was presented with reserve junior championship during the pre-sale show. He is a top 10% bull for growth and top 1% for beef value (LM51). He is sired by Maraiscote Floyd, out of Maraiscote Otter and was born in April 2023.

Hot on the heels of Urbane was fellow room mate lot 413 Maraiscote Utwo, a January 2023 born bull, sold by Ian Nimmo to Thomas Meiklem and sons, Blairadam, Kelty. Third place winning, Utwo, is a Bassingfield Machoman son, bringing in French lines with Condor and Ionesco in his back pedigree. Ionesco is ranked at the top of his breed in France for overall beef merit index scoring 117. Utwo is out of homebred Maraiscote Japonica who is sired by Goldies Comet a top price bull at Carlisle in February 2009 selling for 23,000gns. This bull is another double F94L myostatin carrying male.

Next up to secure an 8,000gns bid was March 2023 born, Corsairtly Umbro, lotted as number 437 in the catalogue and awarded a second place rosette by Walter in the presale show. Securing Mr R and K Davidson’s top price for the day, Umbro is off to reside with Boginduie Farming Co, Aberlour, Aberdeenshire. He is sired by Whinfellpark Ronaldo whose sire is Gunnerfleet lion, stock bull for Whinfellpark who has produced successful showing stock and progeny selling to 45,000gns. Umbro is out of homebred dam Carsairtly Indie and has one copy of the F94L and one copy of the Q204X myostatin genes.

Swiftly onto another 8,000gns bull, this timelot number 438 Dyke Urgent from Messrs JR MacGregor,Milton of Campsie, Glasgow. This double F94L bull is an easy calving Goldies Lordoftherings son, bred by Bruce Goldie. Urgent is out of Dyke Neve who is a Dyke Viva daughter, Viva has bred bulls selling for 11,000gns and 9,000gns. Urgent has top EBV scores being top 1% of the breed for gestation length and top 10% for growth, muscle depth, beef value and docility. Urgent is a natural calf born in March 2023.

The third bull for Ian Nimmo, Maraiscote Uncletam, a May 2023 born bull lotted as number 477, went to Laga Farms, Orkney, for 8,000gns. Wearing a third-place rosette, he carries a double F94L myostatin status and is in the top 10% of the breed for growth and beef value. Uncletam isn’t short of impressive breeding, he is by Sliabh Felim Mourinho, a bull bred by Sean Ryan in Cappamore, Eire, who was purchased by the Nimmo family in May 2019 for 11,000 euros.Uncletam is out of a Bassingfield Machoman daughter Maraiscote Paulina.

Mr W Lawson, Windsole, Perth and Kinross, had a small draft of females which sold to an average of 2,100gns. Windsole Juliana sired by Rocky and out of Windsole Utopia; Windsole Sunny sired by Gallaber Leo and out of Windsole Juniper; and Windsole Tara sired by Aultside Meanmachine and out of Windsole Jolene; along with Tara’s calf Windsole Vicky are off to breed for Messrs Samuel, Orlham herd, Leddington, Ledbury.
