  • Cowin Viper crowned elite junior interbreed champion
  • Glangwden Velvet tapped out as reserve overall commercial champion and reserve senior champion

  • Limousin bred heifer takes home commercial championship

The Limousin section at the 2025 Royal Welsh Show, held on Monday 21st July, once again showcased the strength and appeal of the British Limousin breed. This year’s judging responsibilities were undertaken by Mr Ian Nimmo of the renowned Maraiscote herd, based at Bogside Farm, North Lanarkshire.

Although entry numbers were slightly down on previous years, the standard of cattle on display remained impressively high. Judging attracted a strong ringside audience of breeders, commercial producers, and keen spectators.

Arradfoot Udine, overall interbeed champion

Arradfoot Udine, an eye-catching and well-balanced heifer bred by Thor Atkinson, Ulverston, Cumbria, stood out from the outset and was awarded female and overall Limousin champion, before going on to secure the prestigious overall interbreed championship, underlining her exceptional quality and stand out appeal.
Born in January 2023 Udine is sired by the herd’s stock bull, Upperffrydd Power, a Trueman Jagger son, and is out of Arradfoot Nancy, a homebred daughter of Goldies Comet.

Mr Ian Nimmo of the Maraiscote herd, judge of the pedigree Limousin RWS 2025 classes.

Commenting after the judging, Mr Nimmo said:
“My champion stood out as soon as she entered the ring, tremendous quality and oozed style, and character. My reserve champion was a super fresh young cow doing a tremendous job on her exceptional calf at foot. Although cattle numbers were down, I thought there were exceptional Limousin cattle forward.”

Pabo Rightlove, overall reserve champion

Taking reserve female and overall reserve champion was Pabo Rightlove, a mature cow with calf at foot from W P Hughes & Son, Fferam Gyd, Anglesey. Born in April 2020, Rightlove is sired by Gerrygullinane Glen, out of the homebred cow Pabo Ladylove. Her June 2025-born bull calf, Pabo Allnightlong, is by Pabo Rocknroll and features Grahams Nashville and Claragh Franco in his pedigree.

Pabo Valencia, overall male champion

The junior bull and overall male champion title went to Pabo Valencia, also from W P Hughes & Son. This April 2024-born is sired by Doldorsllwyn Brynmor and out of the homebred cow Pabo Nainsi, a daughter of Netherhall Jackpot.

Cowin Viper, elite junior interbreed champion

Reserve male and reserve junior bull was Cowin Viper, exhibited by W D D & C James of Blaencowin, Carmarthenshire, who later went on to win the elite junior interbreed championship. Born in February 2024, this stylish young bull impressed with his balance and ring presence. Viper is sired by the renowned Gunnerfleet Lion, who sold for 22,000gns at Carlisle in February 2017. His dam is Cowin Heather, a homebred Objat daughter.

Cowin Voney, best junior heifer and best exhibitor-bred maiden heifer

In the younger female classes, Cowin Voney claimed both best junior heifer and best exhibitor-bred maiden heifer born in 2024, bred by W D D & C James. She is sired by the herds stock bull Homebyres Lockett, a Lowerffrydd Empire son and is out of a Wilodge LJ daughter, Cowin Riley.

Pabo Venus, another top young heifer from W P Hughes & Son, was awarded reserve best junior heifer and reserve best exhibitor-bred maiden heifer born in 2024. Born in June 2024, she is an embryo calf sired by homebred bull Pabo Oldspice and out of Pabo Haf, a daughter of Sympa.

Best group of three animals, W P Hughes & Son

In the pairs and group competitions, W P Hughes & Son demonstrated the consistency of their team, securing best pair and best group of three animals. Their team’s performance across various classes earned them a notable collection of accolades.

In the commercial section, Bella, a February 2024-born Limousin-cross, was crowned overall commercial champion after winning both the exhibitor-bred class and the senior championship. Bred by Tecwyn Jones of Caer Gwrli, Anglesey, Bella is sired by the homebred bull Seisiog Rio, whose pedigree features leading sires Elite Forever Brill and Wilodge Vantastic.

Bella has already enjoyed fantastic results on the show circuit, having claimed the baby beef championship at Agri Expo 2024, along with champion heifer and reserve baby beef champion honours at the Welsh Winter Fair 2024. Success clearly runs in the family—her full sister, Twilight, secured the prestigious supreme champion title at the same Welsh Winter Fair.

Glangwden Velvet, exhibited by Edwards Brothers, Pencraig Fawr, Denbighshire, was tapped out as reserve overall commercial champion and reserve senior champion. This striking May 2024-born heifer was admired for her style and presence. Bred by C L & F E Jerman, Glangwden, Powys, Velvet is sired by the herds stock bull Mystyle Perigrino, a Ampertaine Elgin son, and out of the home bred cow Glangwden Opium.

Limousins also dominated the baby beef commercial section with Sarkley Vianna being tapped out as Baby Beef Champion. This November 2024-born heifer is sired by Carnew Millreef and is out of a Claragh Franco daughter.

While entries may have been fewer this year due to Bluetongue restrictions, the cattle that were able to attend were of high calibre and clearly demonstrated the enduring qualities that make Limousin cattle a first choice for both pedigree and commercial producers.
