One-two in Baby Beef Championships
The sixth Borderway Agri-Expo held on Friday 2nd November at Harrison & Hetherington’s Carlisle Mart saw Limousin cattle enjoy a clean sweep of awards having dominated the entries with 157 of the 251 cattle sired by a Limousin bull.
Tecwyn Jones, Ty Newydd, Nebo, Llanwrst continued his winning ways following his supreme championship success at last month’s Countryside Live to take the Supreme Championship at Agri-Expo with the Limousin-cross heifer Black Beauty under Judge Mr Gareth Corrie, Drumhilla Farm, Crossnamuckley Road, Newtownards, Northern Ireland. Sired by Shire Apollo and out of a British Blue-cross dam, the June 2011-born black-coated heifer was bred by John Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
Following on from taking the Steer Championship to clinch the Reserve Overall title was the 675kg No Likey No Lighty from Mr & Mrs M Alford, Foxhill Farm Cullompton, Devon. Bred by Messrs Powell, Talgarth, Powys and purchased at Brecon earlier this year, this purebred Limousin bullock is by a son of the noted Limousin sire Fieldson Alfy. The result here mirrored Countryside Live where he had also stood Steer Champion & Reserve Overall, having previously taken the steer title at the 2012 Royal Welsh Show, Interbreed Champion at Frome, Reserve Overall at Royal Cornwall and Overall Champion at the Three Counties Show.
Taking Reserve honours in the steer section was James Alexander, Gloverstown Road, Randalstown, Co Antrim, with the 654kg bullock The Outlaw. Sired by Coolistown Aron and out of a Limousin cross dam, this one is bred by the exhibitor. Reserve Heifer Champion was Miss Moneypenny from Messrs White & Scarborough, Manor Farm, Newland, Goole. June 2011-born, she was bred by GC & KJ White & Son, Rigg Farm, Lunedale, Middleton-In-Teesdale.
There was a one-two in the Baby Beef Championships for the Limousin breed in front of Judge Mr John McAlister, West Thomaston Farm, Banknock, Stirlingshire. Champion Baby Animal was That’s My Boy, a Limousin-cross steer from Messrs Donaldson & Hall, Hazel House, Tollerton Road, York. This was by the French-bred sire Soleil and is out of a British Blue cross dam. Scaling 334kg, he was bred by D & CE Marston, Easegill Head, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. Taking Reserve honours was the 367kg homebred steer, Mr B, from Messrs C, G & O Bailey, Sandhall Farm, Skelton, Howden, Goole.
