Whiskey Jazee from Mr G Walters, Duffryn Farm, Llansoy, Usk, sold for 8300gns to take the top price at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s May Sale held at McCartneys Brecon Market on Saturday 14th May.
This embryo calf is by Powerhouse Elite and is out of Wilodge Dellola, a daughter of the noted Sarkley Bellola. Whiskey Jazee was the result of ten eggs purchased from the noted Shifnal based Wilodge herd. The ten eggs, bought to fast track the genetics in the herd and to bring some current bloodlines, have resulted in six females and three bulls including Jazee. Purchasing the top price bull was Mrs S Gunter and Mr OD Tranter, Illa Farm, Rhaglan, Abergavenny who run the Illa pedigree herd and also a 140 cow commercial herd. Mr Tranter had purchased a bull last year privately from the Whiskey herd and had set his sights on the offering at Brecon. Earlier in the morning this December 2014 born bull with ‘power, squareness, and natural width’ had been placed as Reserve Supreme Champion in the pre-sale show in front of the judge for the day Adam Watson of the Saunders herd, Saunders Close, Slaggyford, Brampton, Cumbria. Enjoying a good trading day the Whiskey herd sold five bulls in all to gross 22,050gns to average just over 4400gns.
On the day three bulls made 8000gns or more with 33 bulls selling to an average of £3728. In front of a big crowd the clearance rate was a solid 70%.
Selling at 8200gns was the Supreme Overall Champion in the shape of the November 2014 born Dyfri Jensen from DG & MJ Edwards & Son, Home Farm, Cilycwm, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire. This calf is by the AI sire Plumtree Deus and is out of Dyfri Dream, a Senateur daughter described as one of the best young cows in the herd. Purchasing this bull, which carried a Beef Value of LM+43 with good performance figures for growth, muscle and milk, was the Monaughty pedigree herd of C&S Thomas, Llanliggo, Monaughty, Knighton, Powys. The 8200gns price was a good follow up to the February Sale at Brecon which the Dyfri herd had topped at 6000gns.
The third top priced bull was the 8000gns was Haulfryn Jubilee from Mr RG Whitley, Haulfryn Farming, Spon Farm, Spon Green, Buckley, Clwyd. Entirely French bred this September 2014 calf is by Arthur, the National Champion in the Beef Class at the 2009 French National Show, and is out of Flanelle. Taking this bull home was DE Evans, Monfa, Gwernaffield Road, Mold, Flintshire.
The second youngest bull in the catalogue, Garyvaughan Lely, from Colin Lewis, Buttington New Hall, Buttington, Welshpool, Powys sold for 4600gns. This calf is another by Plumtree Deus, the Garyvaughan herd stock bull, and is out of Garyvaughan Chelsea, a Nouvelle Prospect daughter. This bull was knocked down to DE Lloyd, Cefnbarrach, Trefeglwys, Caersws, Powys.
Two lots earlier the Cloughhead Lord son Rhiwllech Lord made 4400gns when selling for Mr DM Howells, Gelli Farm, Cymmer, Port Talbot, West Glamorgan. A February 2015 born son of the noted AI sire Cloughhead Lord, Rhiwllech Lord is out of Rhiwllech Gemma. Purchasing this bull was B Davies, Tycanol, Dyffryn Crawnon, Llangynidr, Crickhowell.
Regular consignors Mr JH Neale & Son, Wilkie Down, Boyton, Launceston, Cornwall made 4200gns when selling the May 2014 born Nealford Jaydee. In 2015 this bull had placed first at the Royal Cornwall Show. By the herd stock sire Procters Cavalier, and out of Nealford Alexis, Nealford Jaydee was bought by WG Woosnam, Upper Gwestyydd, Cefn Mawr, Newtown, Powys.
Also from Cornwall was Treloweth Johno from AMC Eddy, Treloweth Farm, 10 Treloweth Lane, St Erth, Hayle. Another calf with a show record, Treloweth Johno had been a first prize winner at the Cornwall Pedigree Calf Show. Sired by Chytodden Conan, and out of the Haltcliffe Vermount sired Nebo Honey, this October 2014 born bull was knocked down to RI Price Penwingon Fawr, Trecastle, Brecon, Powys for 4100gns.
Early in the catalogue was Ashledge Janika which made 4000gns when selling for Messrs AG Kirton & Son, Severn Lodge Farm, Buttonbridge Lane, Kinlet, Bewdley. Sired by the Wilodge Vantastic son Spittalton Fletcher and out of Ashledge Farthing, this April 2014 born bull was bought by RD Shackleton, Starway Farm, Mathry, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
The sale of females was led at 2400gns by the served heifer Sherry Iona from T&S jones, Bowley, Clehonger, Herefordshire. This November 2013 born heifer is by the Objat son Etudiant and is out of Sherry Gigi, a Wilodge Vantastic daughter. Purchasing the top price female was the Forge herd of Tom Pearson, The Forge, Hampton Bishop, Nr Hereford.
