A strong trade with high commercial interest was seen at Brecon Premier Sale of Pedigree Limousin Bulls and Females on Saturday 10th May. Buyers from across England and Wales were eager to secure leading genetics, particularly bulls offering top 10% traits and proven maternal lines. With 18 bulls sold to an average of £7,536.67, up £1,642 from 2024, 89% of bulls changed hands for between 5,000gns and 10,000gns and 11 of these went to commercial breeders.

Orlham Uzi PP- Top Price 15,000gns

Leading the trade at 15,000gns was the first lot through the ring, Orlham Uzi PP, a two-year-old homozygous polled and double F94L bull bred by Messrs GH, JM and MJ Samuel, Leadington, Herefordshire. Matthew Samuel commented on how pleased they were with Uzi PP and that this was their first time selling at a Premier Collective Sale. Sired by Paddock, Uzi PP combines elite polled genetics with performance figures placing him in the top 10% for a range of key traits, including birth weight and maternal calving ease. Bred of out Orlham Poppy, who goes back to Ivoire, Uzi was snapped up by J Quant, North Whilborough, Devon, to join the Quants herd. What a way to kick off the sale.

Ashledge Victorious- 10,000gns Reserve Senior Champion

The quality show of bulls continued with Ashledge Victorious, an 15 month-old bull bred by AG Kirton and Sons. Victorious is by Ashledge Ontario and out of Ashledge Moonstone, a daughter of Haltcliffe Iceman and he boasts top 1% Beef Value (LM64) and muscle/fat depth EBVs and a myostatin pairing of F94L/NT821. Securing a sale price of 10,000gns when he caught the eye of M Evans, Pembrokeshire, for his Sarahlou herd, he was also tapped out  reserve junior champion in the pre-sale show by Judge Andrew Ewing Jnr.

Traveling from Scotland for the occasion, Andrew farms alongside his father on their 400-acre beef enterprise in Annan with their renowned Fairywater Limousin herd. They manage around 150 cows – a mixture of Pedigree and Limousin cross and were heavily involved in exporting livestock to Northern Ireland and Europe up until the current Blue Tongue restrictions.

Poole Viking- 9,800gns

Moments before the 16 month-old Poole Viking, was purchased by Paul Tippetts, for the Wilodge herd of Shifnal, Shropshire for 9,800gns. This homozygous F94L bull with top 10% growth rate figures is sired by Ampertaine Elgin and out of the renowned Bankdale Elizabeth, dam of numerous five-figure whose progeny have sold to 38,000gns. Viking was exhibited by Mr T F Hilsdon Knowstone, South Moulton, and was placed third in his class in the morning’s show.

Cowin Upbeat- 9,000gns Senior Champion

Another highlight was Cowin Upbeat, the days senior champion, who realised 9,000gns when he was knocked down to the Melingrug herd of TE Thomas & Co, Llanfair Caereinion, Welshpool. By Ampertaine Opportunity and out of Cowin Irtha, a Loosebeare Fantastic daughter, this July 2023-born bull with a myostatin status of F94L/F94L, was bred and exhibited by W D Dyfan and Carol James, Bryn Iwan, Carmarthenshire.

Cowin Ulster- 8,500gns

From the same home and the first of two to secure 8,500gns was Cowin Ulster, by Aghadolgan Emperor and out of the Plumtree Fantastic-sired Cowin Rolande. This June 2023-born bull placed second in his class was purchased by JHM Williams, Llandrindod Wells, Powys. With a myostatin status of F94L/Q204X, Ulster features in the top 10% of the breed with a Beef Value of LM42.

Dyfri Umpire- 8,500gns

Also Selling for 8,500gns was Lot 18, Dyfri Umpire, a 21-month-old with an F94L myostatin pairing, this time from D G and  M J Edwards & Son, Cilycwm, Carmarthenshire. This Fenomen son, out of Dyfri Jacoba who is by Plumtree Deus, incorporates a powerful performance profile including top 1% rankings for 200-day milk and 400-day growth. Placing third in his class, he was purchased by PE and SE Morris, Bedlinog, Mid Glamorgan.

Killerton Ulinda- 7,200gns Reserve Senior Champion

The reserve senior champion accolade went to Lot 11, Killerton Ulinda, a June 2023-born bull from Mr and Mrs PW & SM Greed, who sold for 7,200gns to TJ and EM Price, Dinedor, Herefordshire. With F94L/NT821 myostatin, Ulinda is by Foxhillfarm Montreal and out of Killerton Linda, a daughter of Emslies Horny.

Treloweth Vanguard- 7,000

Completing the sale of bulls on a high was the final lot Treloweth Vanguard, a strong entry from A M C Eddy, who claimed the red rosette for his class and sold for 7,000gns. By Ampertaine Elgin and out of Treloweth Natasha, who goes back to Ampertaine Foreman, this February 2024-born bull with top 10% growth EBV’s and myostatin of F94L/Q204X,heads home to work for T and M Lewis, Llandrindod Wells, Powys.

Females

The females on offer were also sought after with cows and calves averaging £5,092.50. Leading the female section was Cowin Rhydwen, who sold for 5,200gns to R John, Llandybie, Carmarthenshire, for his Gwyddfan herd. Bred by the aforementioned W D Dyfan and Carol James, this four-year-old daughter of Plumtree Fantastic and out of Cowin Odwen, who is in turned sired by Cowin Hitman. With F94L/Q204X myostatin and top 10% EBVs for growth, Beef Value (LM47), and longevity, she is also ranked in the top 1% for age at first calving. Sold in calf to Haltcliffe Umpire, she also came with a well-grown September 2024-born bull calf at foot, Cowin Vtastic, who is sired by Burnbank Officer.

Another from the James family, Cowin Savannah, a May 2021-born in-calf cow, sold for 4,500gns to Coldbrook Farming Ltd, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan for their Coldbrook herd. Savannah is another with excellent figures and ranks in the top 1% of the breed for growth and beef value (LM57). By Foxhillfarm Ourbest and out of Cowin Lovely, she has a double F94L myostatin status and is in calf to Ionesco. At foot was a smart eight-month-old heifer calf, Cowin Vannah, sired by Ampertaine Opportunity.

Heifers averaged £3,196.67 and claiming the reserve female champion title was another offering from the James’ Cowin Urockgirl. A stylish 22-month-old, F94L/Q204X heifer, she sold for 4,200gns to R John, Llandybie. Sired by Pabo Rocknroll and out of Cowin Orion (by Mereside Lorenzo), she is another top 10% performer for growth, with Beef Value (LM47).

From the same home Lot 57, Cowin Umai, secured the female champion rosette and sold for 3,500gns to HG and GHM Davies, Llandefalle, Powys, for the Beaconsview herd. This September 2023-born heifer carries a myostatin status of NT821/Q204X and boasts top 10% performance for Beef Value (LM47), and  growth, and retail value (LM43R). She is a daughter of Ampertaine Jeronimo and out of the Loosebeare Master-sired Cowin Petra.

Another strong offering from the Cowin herd matched the price at 3,500gns, this time heading to J Beasley and Sons, Haley Green, West Midlands. Cowin Ubiza, a 19-month-old heifer by Huntershall Seth and out of Cowin Obiza, she is from the proven Ampertaine Gigolo line and with a myostatin status of F94L/Q204X she also ranks in the top 10% of the breed for maternal traits and gestation length.
