The British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) Breeders’ Sale held on behalf of Members of the South West Limousin Club on Wednesday 11th April 2012 at Holsworthy Market, Devon, realised a top price of 4,400gns. A good overall standard of bulls met with a largely commercial trade with 8 bulls selling to an average of £3,195 representing an increase of £187 on the year.
Mr & Mrs PW & SM Greed, Columbjohn Farm Ltd, Rewe, Exeter took the day’s top price as well as both the Champion & Reserve tickets under Judge Mr Bill White, Coulsworthy Farm, Combe Martin, Devon. Leading the trade at 4,400gns was the two-year-old bull, Killerton Faberge, sired by Lowabbey United and out of the homebred dam, Killerton Vofive, when going under the hammer to Messrs GA Richards, Trendeal Farm, Summer Court, Newquay. Adding an extra dimension to the sale, purchasers of the highest price animal were rewarded with an all-expenses-paid invitation to the South West Club’s trip to Ireland in July. Killerton Faberge was sold with a Beef Value of LM+39, and with a 400 Day Growth EBV of +77, which put him squarely in the top 1% of performance-recorded Limousins. Having been put up as Champion in the pre-sale show, Judge Bill White commented: “My Champion was a tremendous, well-grown bull with very good potential, showing good muscle and shape for his age.”
The same purchaser also took home the day’s second leading price at 3,700gns in the shape of Stourhead Ferdie, consigned by H & JL Parker, Home Farm, Stourton, Warminster. July 2010 born, and the youngest lot sold, Ferdie is by the Ronick Hawk grandson, Killerton Chicago, and is out of the Utha-sired dam, Stourhead Cordelia. This bull combines easy calving lines with above average growth rates and a Beef Value of LM+22. Messrs Parker had sold the preceding lot, Stourhead Farlap, for 2,600gns to cement a good day’s trading. Stourhead Farlap, another rising 21-month-old bull, is by the same sire but this time out of Stourhead Chickpea, a dam with bloodlines going back to the noted Dyfri and Montgomery herds respectively. Purchasers were JH Pellow & Sons, Cathebedron Farm, Carnhell Green, Cambourne.
The Reserve Champion, Killerton Frodo, made 3,600gns when knocked down to Lower Glen Ltd, Cofford Farm, Star Cross, Exeter and concluded a one-two of championship honours for Messrs Greed. Sired by Lowabbey United, and out of Killerton Trudy, this rising two-year-old bull was sold with a Beef Value of LM+27.
Realising a final bid of 3,000gns was Bailea Fairisle shown by Welsh breeders MT Jones of Heol Senni, Sennybridge, Brecon. Bailea Fairisle, May 2010 born, is by the French sire, Salomon, and is out of the Marron daughter, Bailea Sabrina. He sold to R&J Banwell, Mill Farm, Quab Lane, Wedmere, Somerset.
At the 2,600gns mark was Brayhills Fairtrade, brought out by Messrs WM & N Thorne, Beara Farm, Brayford, Barnstaple. June 2010 born, Brayhills Fairtrade is by Grange Valparaiso, a grandson of the noted French sire Ideal 23, and is out of the Malibu-sired dam, Quaish Umadame. New owners are WT Key & Son, Bodellick Farm, St Breock, Wadebridge.
