Club Report 2007

The South East Limousin Cattle Club started the year with the AGM, held on the 22nd February 2007 at the ‘Old Eden’ in Edenbridge. The Chairman and Secretary for 2006, John Reynolds and Karen Whiting, continued in the same roles for 2007, along with Roger Brown as Treasurer to the Club.

2007 continued with our usual two herd competitions, the Pedigree Limousin Competition and for the fourth year, our successful Commercial Competition, which attracts a wide range of entries from within the South East area.

The Pedigree Competition was kindly judged this year by Messrs James & Duncan Hazard who travelled from Grantham to judge for us this summer. Both judges were very pleased with the standard of cattle in the South East and our thanks go to the brothers for judging this year as well as to Mr Chris Passmore for hosting them during their stay in the South East. The overall winning herd in 2007 receiving the Chris Lomas Memorial Plate was Buriton Estates, with the Reserve Herd going to Brian Baker with his Wealden Herd.

The Commercial Competition was kindly judged by Vicky Maynard & Matt Smith from Caseberry Farm in Devon and they were both impressed by the standard of cattle throughout their tour of the South of England, although we had a limited number of entries this year and some herds were judged by video (due to the FMD outbreak) the Champion Herd went to Mr & Mrs Izzard, with the Reserve Herd going to Mr Brian Foster.

Thank you to all the herds that took part in the competitions; the more herds we can attract the better the competitions are!

The annual dinner and awards presentation for the herd competitions was this year hosted by Sarah & Jason Wareham at Tottingworth Farms on the 13th October. Although the evening did not include the usual farm walk due to the restrictions with FMD & Blue Tongue, we nevertheless had a high number of people attending; our thanks go to Sarah & friends for all that cooking!

The show season started well for the South East this year, beginning at Heathfield show, with less mud than the previous year! Newstart Bravura, won the Maiden Heifer class and took Breed Female Champion & Overall Breed Champion. Newstart Bravura comes from a new South East Limousin member for 2007, Miss D Julian from Oakbarn Limousin.

The Surrey County Show in May saw Miscombe Bowtie from Buriton Estates taking Reserve Male Champion; he also took Male Breed Champion and Reserve Overall Champion at the South of England show in June. Well done to Mary & John Reynolds.

Other show successes were slightly inhibited by the unfortunate outbreak of FMD in Surrey, but Thorndean Atlast, Sue Watson’s heifer, took Overall Breed Champion and Female Champion at the South of England show this year. Well done to all at Thorndean Farms. She was also part of the winning Limousin Group of Four at the Kent Show where they won the 2007 Double Day Cup, a great success for the Limousin breed in the South East!

Once again, the South East Limousin Cattle Club would like to say a big thank you to all the members and committee for all their hard work during the year and we hope that you all have a successful, disease free 2008.
