Club Report 2009

The year started with a champagne reception and dinner in Llandrindod Wells to celebrate 25 years since the formation of our Club. Society officials and founder members were invited to join us, and an enjoyable evening was had by all.

In May the Beef Expo was held at Malvern, where members of the club provided animals for the Limousin stand, and members were on hand all day to serve refreshments and advice.

May also saw a very successful Society sale at Brecon, with a 100% clearance, with bulls averaging £4,275. Brecon continues to flourish as a Limousin sale centre with increased number of entries and buyers. The November sale was also very successful with an average of £3,467, with a new centre record of 12,000gns for Glangwden Derwent, a Haltcliffe Ullswater son from Chris and Fiona Jerman.

In July many members headed to the Society Open Day at Smiths of Bloxham, meeting up with many friends from within the breed and having an enjoyable day.

July also saw the last Royal Show held at Stoneleigh. The Club entered five members in the Young Breeders’ Stock Judging competition, where they all judged admirably, where both Senior and Junior teams gained second position, and David Gethin was the highest place 17 – 21 year old thus winning a very memorable trip to Canada’s Western Agribition in November. Both David and Ffion Jones were then picked to represent the mainland team in the Anglo Irish competition at Red ladies in December. I hope the young breeders will continue to hold a stock judging event even though the Royal Show as such will be no more, in order that these young breeders can have the opportunities these members have had to gain more experience and eventually be included in the list of Limousin judges.

July of course saw our social event of the year, the Royal Welsh Show, which seems to go from strength to strength each year with increased numbers attending. There were about 110 Limousins forward for judging this year, and the standard throughout was exceptional.

The weather throughout the showing season was wet to say the least, and one of the casualties of the weather was the Brecon Show, which was cancelled. This was to be our first Club Calf Show, and the entries and sponsorship promised was extremely encouraging, and I hope that members will support this next year and make it a successful annual club event.

September saw our annual Club Sale at Whitland, conducted by JJ Morris. An entry of good quality cattle from 14 different vendors met a solid trade with almost total clearance. Bulls peaked at 3,300gns to average 2,400gns with young heifers peaking at 1,800gns averaging 1,160gns.

The herd competition this year was judged by Dougie McBeath and Sarah- Jane Jessop. I would like to thank them very much for taking the time to come and judge our herds and also for travelling all the way back down to announce the winners at our annual dinner in November, the results of which are listed below.

The Welsh Winter Fair is always the last event of the year, again an event which is gaining in popularity, where once more the standard of animals is very high. The Society has a large stand at the fair where tea, coffee and mince pies are provided. We have four young bulls on the stand for the public to admire, and I would like to thank the Glangwden, Cowin and Dinmore herds for providing the bulls on this occasion.
