A Limousin cow and calf unit from Messrs McKenna Bros, Main St, Bellaghy, Co Derry topped the all-female trade at the Society Sale held on 23rd January at Ballymena Mart. Overall 40 lots averaged £1,207 with a good clearance rate of 40 from 57 lots forward with the keenest demand for in-calf heifers which averaged £1,764.

The day’s top price of 2,250gns went to Messrs McKenna with their June 2006 born first calver, Archies Buttercup, sold with her March 2009 born heifer calf at foot, Archies Ellie, sired by Malibu. By the AI sire Oxygene, sire of the 30,000gns Wilodge Tonka, Archies Buttercup is out of the dam Shanesview Sadie. Purchaser was Mr Alan Armstrong, Seskin Road, Ballyclare who bought a total of four lots including the McKennas’ 1,750gns Archies Daisy, by Nestor and out of the Ronick Hawk daughter, Kirtlevale Vicky, and carrying a Beef Value of LM+26.

Another heading to Mr Armstrong was the top-priced in-calf heifer, Seaview Clarissa, consigned by Mr H McCracken, Ganaway Rd, Ballywalter, Newtownards. Clarissa is by the homebred sire, Seaview Alfy, and out of the Grahams Samson daughter, Seaview Vanessa. Sporting a Beef Value of LM+18 she was sold in-calf to the Nectar son, Seaview Captain, for 1,880gns.

At the 1,900gns mark was the June 2008 born heifer, Bodearg Dani, brought forward by Mr S Cullinan, Edergole Rd, Fintona, Co Tyrone. Nineteen months old, she is by Sauvignon and out of the dam, Oxtown Jinney. Purchaser was Mr Paul Campbell, Ballyvaddy Road, Carnlough for the Spage herd.
