An evening sale of Limousin females held at Carlisle’s Borderway Mart on Friday 17th February met with a lively demand and saw 84 out of 85 lots sell with a leading price of 5,000gns.

Taking the top price was the May 2010 born Cloughhead Felice from local breeder GL Hutton, Setmabanning, Threlkeld, Keswick, Cumbria.  Sired by the French bull Toucan this heifer is out of the Ugues-sired Cloughhead Calise.  Paying the top price was TP Atkinson, Meadow View, Newland, Nr. Ulverston for their Arradfoot pedigree herd.  The Cloughhead herd had seventeen head forward in all and featured in many of the sale’s top prices.

Cloughhead Felice - top priced female at 5000gns

Second top price of 4,200gns also went to Cloughhead and was paid for Cloughhead Fawn.  This June 2010 born heifer is by the Genial son Cloughhead Ace and is out of the Greenwell Major-sired dam Cloughhead Treasure.   Cloughhead Ace has previously sired progeny up to 13,000gns.  The purchaser was Jim Scott who runs the long established Ardigon pedigree herd at Ardigon Lodge, Killyleagh, Co. Down, N. Ireland.

Kicking off the sale was a consignment of thirteen females with calves at foot from the Millington herd based at The Grange, Millington, York.  Their leading price was the 4,100gns paid for January 2005 born Millington Amanda sold in-calf and with her bull calf at foot Millington Grenada.  Millington Amanda is by the French sire Moero and is out of Newsham Mandy.  Her May 2011 born bull calf is by Millington Chief.  Purchasing the outfit was Messrs Lamb, The How, Seascale, Cumbria for their Seascale herd.

The previous lot had seen the June 2002 born Millington Tandy sell for 3,800gns.  Again a ‘three lives’ purchase, Tandy was sold scanned in calf and with her Millington Chief-sired bull calf Millington Ganda at foot.  Millington Tandy is by the noted show bull Woodhouse Prince and is out of the Shire Imran-sired Newsham Mandy.  This outfit was snapped up by W & J Thomson who run the Hownamgrange herd at Hownam Grange, Morebattle, Kelso, Roxburghsire.

Also at 3,800gns was another from the Cloughhead offering and this time in the shape of the May 2010 born Cloughhead Fortune.  This heifer is by the bull Ugues, whose progeny have previously sold up to 11000gns, and is out of the homebred dam Cloughhead Bessie.  Taking this heifer home was GA & DE Thompson, Howburn, Garrigill, Alston, Cumbria.

Cloughhead Eliza made 3,600gns when selling to new breeders T Scott & Co, Gateside, Linlithgow, W. Lothian.  This December 2009 born female is by Cloughhead Ace and is out of the 2004 born Cloughhead Vino.

Cloughhead confirmed a solid sale from their offering when they sold a further heifer to make 3,500gns.  This price was paid for the June 2010 born Cloughhead Feather.  Another by Cloughhead Ace, Feather is out of the Cloughhead Jurassic-sired Cloughhead Rosette.  Again going to a pedigree herd, the buyer was G Fearon Ltd, Hollows Farm, Grange, Keswick, Cumbria for the Hollows herd.

The second heifer at 3,500gns was Homebyres Flame, one of three lots offered by Messrs John Logan, Humebyres, Kelso, Roxburghshire.  August 2010 born, Homebyres Flame is entirely homebred being by the Sympa-sired Homebyres Arnott and out of Homebyres Verena.  This animal was one of seven purchases on the night by the Dutch company Cowporation BV of Alblasserdam, GB Ridderkerk, Holland.  The sales to Cowporation marked another notable export first with these being the first British Limousin animals to be sold and exported to Holland.
