ALL-IRELAND LIMOUSIN DERBY SEES WINS FOR BANVILLE & MILBROOK HERDS

The All-Ireland Limousin Heifer & Bull Derby held on Saturday 1st September 2012 at Elphin Show, Co Roscommon saw honours even with the Northern Ireland-bred Banville Gladiator taking the Bull title and the Female Championship going to Milbrook Gingerspice from Southern Ireland.

This prestigious annual event, first held in 2007, is a cross-border initiative between the Irish Limousin Cattle Society and the Northern Ireland Limousin Club and is confined to exhibitor-bred bulls and heifers. Despite difficult ground conditions, the day stayed dry with an excellent turnout of quality cattle from a record entry of 60 animals competing in four classes.

Overall Bull Champion under Judge Mrs Vicky Smith of the Columbpark Herd, Caseberry Farm, Bradninch, Exeter, Devon was Banville Gladiator from the Berry Brothers, Banbridge who had come through as winner of the first class for bulls born between 1st January 2011 and 31st July 2011. May 2011 born, Banville Gladiator is sired by the stock bull Beechlodge Chancellor, a son of Milbrook Tanko, and is out of Banville Elsie. Placing second in the same class and going on to take the Reserve Male title was the June 2011-born Frewstown Gifted bred by Derek Frew, Antrim who is by the stock bull Carmorn Cantona and out of the homebred dam Frewstown U-girl.

Coming through from the first heifer class for heifers born between 1^st June 2010 and 30th June 2011to take the Female Championship was Milbrook Gingerspice exhibited by William Smith, Oldcastle, Co Meath. This January 2011 born heifer is no stranger to the show circuit having taken both Junior and Overall Interbreed titles at this year’s Royal Ulster Show. Milbrook Gingerspice is sired by the noted Wilodge Vantastic and is out of Milbrook Baby. Mirroring the placings at Balmoral, Reserve Female Champion went to Trueman Grazia bred by Henry Savage, Newry with his Haltcliffe Vermount daughter and out of Cookstown B1425.

Every year points are awarded for the top six places in each class with the Challenge Shield going to the region with the highest number of points. This year, for the first time, the shield was won by the Irish Limousin Cattle Society.
