A 16,800gns cow and calf combination topped the British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) Breeders’ Sale at Newark Livestock Market on Saturday 17th May 2014, and headed the Dispersal Sale of the Birdies Limousin Herd on behalf of William Bird, Oldgate Farm, Barkston Ash, Tadcaster.

The 2007-born French-bred cow, Clochette, by Uruguay and out of Urne, sold with her very strong April 2013-born Brutus-sired heifer calf at foot, Birdies Isabeau, to Danny Sawrij’s Swalesmoor Herd based at Kedzlie Farm, Blainsie, Lauderdale. With tremendous muscling and width, Clochette was bred by Gaec Robert, La Rebeyrolle, St Yrielx La Perche and is a half-sister to the AI sire Bahut. Clochette was sold PD’d in calf to Brutus (Usty x Hirondelle), sire of many of the calves in the sale, who later made 4,800gns when knocked down to F & S Stamper, Salome Lodge Farm, Leighton Bromswold, Cambs.

At 10,000gns was Scorboro Equity, bred by JCG Bloom & Son, and again consigned by Mr Bird which went under the hammer with her heifer calf Birdies Jade to Gascoines Group, Church Street, Southwell, Notts. The same purchaser also snapped up William Bird’s 8,000gns duo of Corridan Diamond, bred by Corridan Farms, Saxby All Saints, Lincs being sired by the Sympa son Corridan Arkle and out of the Greenwell Major daughter Corridan Uvette. Corridan Diamond was sold with her two-month-old Brutus-sired bull calf at foot, Birdies Jim.

Heading to the same home were two other cow and calf outfits which were part of the Birdies Dispersal at 7,500gns and 5,500gns respectively. The 2010-born second calver, Bailgate Flavia, who was purchased as an in-calf heifer at the Bailgate Dispersal for 4,100gns, being by the 100,000gns Haltcliffe Vermount and out of the Vagabond-sired dam Greenwell Donatela, made 7,500gns. She went under the hammer suckling her six-week-old bull calf at foot, Birdies Jez, another by Brutus. At the 5,500gns mark was Corridan Daisy (Corridan Arkle x Corridan Amour) who sold with her Brutus-sired heifer calf, Birdies Jemima at foot.

Back to the leading prices from the Birdies Sale and George McCague, Sheepbridge Road, Newry, N Ireland secured the services of another mother and daughter combination for 6,200gns for his Bridgeview Herd. This came in the shape of Newmarque Fleur, bred by Mark Phillips, Broadoak, Low Braithwaite, Carlisle and an Objat daughter out of the Rocky-sired Newmarque Celia. She sold with her Brutus-sired calf at foot, Birdies Ivy, and back in calf to the same sire.

Chris Clements, Potash Farm, Lawshall, Bury St Edmunds purchased the 6,000gns ten-year-old French cow, Virgule, by Snoopy and out of Joconde, along with her February-born heifer calf at foot, Birdies Iris by Brutus, for his Suffolk-based Roclaw Herd. Virgule was bred by Earl Lagautriere, Boudelongue, Villard, France and is dam of the noted show bull, Bonux. She was sold five months in-calf to Euphrate.

Securing a combined bid of 7,200gns was the 4,200gns Corridan Diddy (Corridan Alladin x Corridan Pamela) sold to PJ & RS Edwards & Sons, Tydraw Farm, Maesycoed, Pontypridd and her rising yearling heifer calf, Birdies Ingrid (by Brutus) who made 3,000gns to GJ Lee & CM Lloyd, Ger y Coed, Four Roads, Kidwelly, Carms. Packed full of pedigree breeding, Messrs Lee & Lloyd also bought the 5,500gns 2003-born cow, Uranie, by Manoir and out of the Highlander-sired Panure, bred by Jean-Louis Theron, Pouzols, France who sold with her Nenuphar-sired heifer calf at foot, Birdies Jasmine.

Another outfit from Birdies, again bred by Corridan Farms, realised 5,000gns. This was in respect of Corridan Delphinium, sired by Corridan Arkle and out of the Nenuphar daughter Corridan Veronica, who sold with her Bonux-sired bull calf at foot, born February 2014, Birdies Jacob. Purchaser was Mark Phillips, Minnydow Burn, Springholm, Castle Douglas.

The Pennys Herd Dispersal on behalf of Messrs P & P Walker, Wilfholme Farm, Watton, Driffield featured 28 pedigree Limousin cows with calves at foot plus six maiden heifers. 3,000gns was achieved twice for two maiden heifers. Pennys Hebe, by Haltcliffe Ben and out of the Ronick Upshot daughter Pennys Ceanothus, sold to Aileen Ritchie, Burnside, Whitecairns, Aberdeen whilst making the same figure was the similarly bred Pennys Helen when snapped up by Tredon Limousins, West Fen Road, Willingham, Cambs.

Heading the Pennys Herd cow and calf prices was the 2,700gns Pennys Emma, a 2009-born cow sired by Aldwyck Jake and out of Pennys Ursula. Purchasers were PR Walker & Son, Manor House Farm, Lund, E Yorks for their Rossellie prefix. Pennys Emma was sold suckling her December-born heifer calf, Pennys Irene (by Procters General) and back in calf to either the same bull or Culnagechan Executive. At 2,600gns was Pennys Christine, a 2007-born Ionesco daughter and out of Pennys Ursula, who was sold with her Ampertaine Foreman-sired bull calf at foot, Pennys Imperial, and back in calf to either Procters General or Culnagechan Executive. New owner is R Stevenson, Nunfield Farm, Cumwhitton, Cumbria.

The Production Sale for D & MLP Woolhouse, Staveley Wold, North Dalton, Driffield saw an in-calf heifer top price of 3,500gns with others at 3,200gns and 3,000gns. Securing a final bid of 3,500gns to Craig Cameron, Greensfern, Bucksburn, Aberdeen was Rachels Hermione, sired by Rachels Dynamite and out of Rachels Rebecca. With a tremendous Beef Value of LM+56, she was sold in-calf to either Vagabond or Millington Fiat. Mr Cameron also took home the 3,000gns Rachels Hayley and the 3,000gns maiden heifer Rachels Ivy for his Greenferns Herd.

Smiths of Bloxham Farms Ltd, Newlands Farm, Bloxham, Banbury had 43 entries catalogued comprising maiden and in-calf heifers. Leading price was the 3,200gns Ironstone Hocuspocus when purchased by Danny Sawrij for his Swalesmoor Limousin Herd. A November 2012-born maiden heifer, Hocuspocus is by the Ramses son, Rathkeeland Dylan, and is out of the Sympa-sired dam Trueman Duet.

JCG Bloom & Son, Scorborough, Driffield secured a top price of 2,400gns for their run of females. This came in the form of Scorboro Hokeykokey, a maiden heifer by Ironstone Colonel and out of Scorboro Cancan (by Coachhouse Supreme) who was purchased by AH Booth, Hardwick Hall Farm, Aston, Sheffield.
