The latter days of the Highland Show have seen Limousin back out in force, taking the top spots across all class types, lifting the interbreed team, reserve overall interbreed, continental performance recorded animal and the commercial championship prizes.
In the Limousin classes judge Stephen Priestley, of the Brontemoor herd, based in Brampton, Cumbria, tapped out the two top females for his overall and reserve champions at the Highland show on Thursday 20th June and leading the line up again, on the back of her numerous successes in the show ring during her inaugural season last year, was J & JF Nimmo’s Maraiscote Tangerine.
Tangerine, who this time last year secured the prestigious interbreed junior champion award, continues her success from last season where amongst over accolades, she claimed the overall, female and junior breed championship prizes at the Great Yorkshire show and the top award of champion of champions at the Strathaven Show in September.
In the climax of the pedigree interbreed section, Tangerine was just pipped at the post from taking the overall RHS interbreed title but was tapped out as the reserve in an extremely strong field. She looked outstanding and her campaign continues to the Great Yorkshire Show in the next few weeks.
Having secured the overall and female breed champion on Thursday the now 25 month-old and Tangerine is a daughter of the herds Irish stock bull and double F94L carrier Morhan Peter, is bred out of Maraiscote Orange who goes back to the 50,000gns Bassingfield Machoman.
Stephen’s pick for breed’s reserve overall champion was also his reserve female champion Brockhurst Tranquillity, bred and exhibited by W J & M Mash, Chesham, Buckinghamshire. Another classy female with a proven show track record, this March 2022-born heifer was beef interbreed champion at the Suffolk show and interbreed champion at the Hertfordshire County Show on the 2023 circuit. With an impressive pedigree behind her, Tranquillity’s dam is the Yorkshire show beef interbreed champion Brockhurst Heavenly, a daughter of the 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic, while she is sired by the £15,000 Procters Mitsubishi.
The male champion was Garrowby Tarzan, shown by R & J Graham, who purchased him from breeders Garrowby Limousin at Carlisle in October for 12,000gns. Sired by a bull bred by his new owners – the 28,000gns Grahams Rooney, the February 2020-born Tarzan is out of Grahams Melody, a Royal Welsh & Great Yorkshire reserve supreme interbreed champion and daughter of Ampertaine Elgin.
On the Friday of the show, this impressive bull went on to see off all of the other competition to lift the continental performance recorded championship, a competition that combines conventional judging with information about animals’ genetic merit.
Standing reserve male champion was AW Jenkinson’s Whinfellpark Upperclass from Penrith, Cumbria, who also picked up the junior bull championship prize. At just 15 months old, he is new to the show circuit and a son of the Carlisle supreme champion and 35,000gns Foxhillfarm Jasper and homebred dam Whinfellpark Redruby, who goes back to Gunnerfleet Lion.
The Junior champion was another exhibit from R & J Graham. Ritchie’s Treasure an August 2022-born heifer, who secured first place tickets at the Red Ladies sale in December and Stars of the Future show in November last year for her breeder Aileen Ritchie, Whitecairns, Aberdeenshire. Bred out of Burnbank Nessa, a daughter of the 32,000gns Huntershall Gladiator, she is sired by the 14,500gns Carnew Millreef.
J & JF Nimmo’s heifer Maraiscote Urprincess from Wishaw, Lancaster, was he reserve junior champion. Like the champion she is sired by Morhan Peter, but this 12 month-old lass and double F94L carrier is bred out of Maraiscote Nellie, a daughter of Stirling sale champion Maraiscote Javelin.
The reserve overall interbreed accolade was not the only interbreed championship which Limousin secured over the four-day show. They were also picked by judge Peter Watson as the Champion Interbreed Team. Breed champion Maraiscote Tangerine was joined by male champion Garrowby Tarzan, junior champion Ritchies Treasure, and last year’s interbreed champion Grahams Ruth to take top honours.
Finishing of this show in style in the Commercial section, it was the Limousin sired heifer – Electra – that took the championship for Stuart and Lynsey Bett. An April-23 born calf, she was bred by Balfour Baillie and is sired by Ronick Redhot.
Our huge congratulations also go to young Limousin ambassador Fletcher Russell on winning the Junior Beef Young Handlers Championship at the 2024 Royal Highland Show
Sincere thanks to all competitors and supporters. A fantastic show of cattle, and super week for Limousin.
