The highly anticipated British Limousin Cattle Society Sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Saturday, 19th October 2024, saw breeders from across the UK gather for what proved to be a robust day of trading. Buyers and enthusiasts were treated to an excellent selection of pedigree Limousin cattle, with lively bidding across the catalogue. 74 bulls were forward on sale day and there were bulls available for all roles and budgets.

The day’s top price was achieved by Killerton Uncanny, which sold for 18,000gns. This exceptional April 2023-born bull with myostatin of F94L/Q204X, top 10% growth rates and a Beef Value of 47, was bred by Patrick and Shelia Greed of Silverton, Devon. A true standout, Killerton Uncanny is sired by Nealford Politician and out of Killerton Panzer, herself by the 10,000gns Foxhillfarm Montreal. Uncanny’s back pedigree and striking presence drew strong interest and he was eventually snapped up by well-known local breeders Eric and Elaine Norman of Carlisle, Cumbria.

Following closely, lot 116, Haulfryn Uboat, fetched an impressive 15,000gns from sellers RG and RS Whitley when he was purchased by Messrs Fowlie of Alford, Aberdeenshire. Uboat, who is sired by Ampertaine Elgin and out of Haulfryn Pia, also carries a myostatin pairing F94L/Q204X and was born on 24th January 2023.

Lot 152, Goldies Upshot, sold for 14,000gns. This first prize-winning bull, sired by Ampertaine Opportunity and out of Goldies Obsession, has a F94L/F94L myostatin status. Upshot was recognized as Limousin champion and reserve beef interbreed champion at the 2024 Dumfries Show, making his sale by Bruce Goldie, Mouswald, Dumfries and Galloway to Messrs Kirton and Sons of Bewdley, Worcestershire, particularly notable.

Bruce Goldie came up trumps for a second time at 14,000gns for lot 168, Goldies United, this time selling to Messrs Ritchie in Aberdeen. This bull is sired by Goldies Terence, out of Goldies Melody and has myostatin of F94L/Q204X. United has an impressive set of EBVs putting him in the top 10 % of the breed for gestation length, 200 day growth, 400 day growth muscle depth, beef value, carcase weight and  200 day milk, and top 1% for docility, highlighting the continued interest in high-performing genetics within the breed.

Goldies United

Next to go under the hammer for 14,000gns was the 18-month-old pre-sale show overall reserve champion, lot 186, Whinfellpark Unleash, sold to Messrs Brass of Penrith from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Penrith. Sired by the record breaking 180,000gns 2022 Champion Graiggoch Rambo and out of the homebred Whinfellpark Purdy, Unleash carries myostatin of F94L/Q204X.

Next to be knocked down was third place winning, lot 181 for 12,000gns. Maraiscote Utah, bred by Mr J Nimmo, Newmains, Wishaw, and purchased by Page Bros, Northampton. This April 2023 born bull is by Bassingfield Machoman who has consistently bred progeny to over 10,000gns. Utah is out of the homebred cow Maraiscote Heroine whose great granddam, Maraiscote Pamela, has bred a successful line of daughters into the herd. Utah carries a F94L/Q204X myostatin combination and sits in the top 10% of the breed for muscle depth and beef value (LM48).

The pre-sale show was judged by the knowledgeable Ali Jackson. Stockman for the Annanview Herd owned by Kevin Watret. Situated locally to the market they run a busy farm of Limousins, Charolais, British Blues and Blue Texel sheep. Ali said, “the day was very enjoyable, and he was pleased to be asked to judge the pre-sale show this October”. Crowned overall champion for the day was Brontemoor Urea, lot 164, described by Ali as an eye-catching bull, very correct, and a bull which stood out as soon as he entered the ring. This easy champion went on to secure a price of 10,000gns and goes off to a new home with Messrs Wight & Sons, Melrose, Roxburghshire. A winning day for the Priestly family of Kirkcambeck, Cumbria, who bred this March 2023-born champion bull. Urea is sired by Fieldson Nitram and out of Brontemoor Penelope and carries two copies of the F94L myostatin gene.

The next 10,000gns was lot number 106 Quickeeze Trigger sold by Messrs EW Quick and Sons, Crediton, Devon, and bred by AR Quick and Partners. Sold to Messrs Field, Burnley, Lancashire, Trigger has myostatin of F94L/F94L and was born in December 2022. Trigger is from a super breeding family, sired by Loosebeare Fantastic with breeding going back to Wilodge Vantastic and Broadmeadows Cannon. His dam is Loosebeare Jessie, by the renowned Aghadolgan Emperor.

Quickeeze Trigger

JM and SP Cooper, Dacre, North Yorkshire, offered the 20-month-old Tomschoice Undercover into the ring who was also sold for 10,000gns. This double F94L myostatin carrying bull is off to work for Messrs Thompson, Penrith, Cumbria. Undercover is by Fieldson Ramos and out of Tomschoice Novel and has a good balance of EBVs for muscle, growth and calving ease.

Messrs Jenkinson’s second bull on offer, lot 160 Whinfellpark Upperclass, sold for 10,000gns to winning bidders Morrison and Sons, Banff. Another bull with impressive figures, Upperclass is in the top 1% of the breed for growth, muscle depth and beef value he is sired by the 35,000gns 2015 overall champion in Carlisle, Foxhillfarm Jasper who has an impressive showing history winning supreme champion at the Royal Highland, male and reserve junior champion at the Great Yorkshire and Royal Welsh shows. Upperclass is bred out of the homebred cow Whinfellpark Redruby who goes back to  Gunnerfleet Lion. This F94L/F94L myostatin carrying bull was born in March 2023 and he won second place in the pre-sale show.

Following on the 10,000gns theme was lot 176 Trueman Usher, from Mr H Savage and Sons, Altnamackin, Newry. This bull carries a copy of the NT821 and the Q204X myostatin genes and is out of Olivia, a Trueman homebred female. Olivia is the outstanding younger daughter of the 40th Anniversary National Champion Trueman Euphonium. Second place rosette winning, Usher is a natural born calf by Telfers Munster and is off to reside in Bakewell, Derbyshire with Messrs Wells and Sons.

Following straight after Usher was lot 177 a Whinfellpark bull from Messrs Jenkinson. Whinfellpark Underwriter is another Graiggoch Rambo son,this time out of Westpit Mila, bred by Messrs A and J Gammie, Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire. He was sold for 10,000gns and is off to Huntly to work for Messrs Hunter. This bull carries the F94L and Q204X myostatin gene and has impressive EBVs to travel with him into Scotland. He is top 1% of the breed for 200 and 400-day growth and was awarded first place in his class during the pre-sale show.

Lot 204 Loosebeare Uptop was given a top spot on show day, as Ali awarded him reserve junior male champion. He was sold by Messrs EW Quick and Sons, Crediton, Devon to Messrs Waring & Son, York, North Yorkshire for 10,000gns. Uptop is a super wide, easy fleshing son of the ever-consistent breeding Ampertaine Jeronimo out of Loosebeare Lovely, a massive milky homebred cow. He April 2023 born with myostatin of F94L/Q204X and in the top 1% of the breed for growth and beef value (LM52).

Pipping Uptop to the post was junior male champion lot 206 Maraiscote Unit. He sold for 10,000gns and is sired by Sliabh Felim Mourinho, an  Irish bull who has consistently produced progeny to 11,000gns. Unit is a natural calf with myostatin of F94L/F94L and this April 2023 born bull was sold by Ian Nimmo to Messrs Hill, Riding Mill, Northumberland. He is out of Maraiscote Osprey who has Bassingfield Machoman and Millgate Fame in her back pedigree.

Lot 212, May 2023 born Haltcliffe Ultimate is a super Ampertaine Elgin son out of a superb brood cow Glenrock Diamante who has sold sons to 26,000gns and heifers to 16,000gns. This F94L and Q204X bull was Sold by Mr Ridley, Wigton, Cumbria to Messrs Wood and Sons, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, for 10,000gns. Ultimate’s sire, Ampertaine Elgin, has been a consistent breeder and has produced countless successful progeny selling up to 180,000gns.

Haltcliffe Ultimate

One out and one in for Mr Ridley, as he went on to purchase lot 214 and first placed, Swarland Uaretheone, sold by A and D Proctor, Morpeth. This May 2023 born natural calf is off to enjoy his job on farm in Northumberland with his double NT821 myostatin result. He is sired by Ronick Nissan, who is out of a Wilodge Cerberus daughter, and his dam is Swarland Nina, sired by Fairywater Haig. Uaretheone was small at birth, has great potential and is in the top 1% for carcase weight.

The next bull carries a myostatin status of F94L/Q204X, Maraiscote Urock, another from Ian Nimmo, sold for 9,000gns to the winning bidder Miller Farms, Inverurie, Invernessshire. Lotted number 208 and winning second place at the presale show, Urock is a May 2023 born bull by Sliabh Felim Mourinho and out of Maraiscote Prada. Urock’s dam is a daughter of successful show animal Maraiscote Gucci who has already bred Maraiscote Ubeauty, a heifer calf sold at the Red Ladies sale for 10,000gns.

Awarded the senior male champion prize this October was lot 115 Pabo Ultimatum, a January 2023 born calf. Llyr and Laura Hughes, Rhosgoch, Anglesey, sold this impressive bull to Messrs Brown, Richmond, North Yorkshire, and (who) describes him as a bull with extreme width and power. Leaving the ring with a bid of 8,000gns Ultimatum is sired by a Sympa son, Haltcliffe Ben and out of a Pabo Icemaden daughter Pabo Rose, and full siblings have sold to 21,000gns, 17,000gns and 12,000gns. Ultimatum has myostatin of F94L/Q204X and is a top 10% bull for growth.

The second bull to go for 8,000gns was Westpit Uraking, lotted as number 148, he is a heifers calf born in March 2023 and was awarded third place in the pre-sale show. He was sold by Messrs A and J Gammie, Aberdeenshire, to Messrs McCallum, Tarbert, Argyll. This quality bull carries F94L/NT821 and is sired by Huntershall Rosco and out of Westpit Royalhighness. Uraking’s great dam, Westpit Priceless, is a full sister to Westpit Nano who sold to the Ronick herd for 20,000gns. Uraking is out of Brockhurst Holy, who has bred many bulls into top pedigree herds.

The last to sell from the Pabo consignment of Llyr and Laura Hughes, was lot 165 Pabo Upandunder. He sold for 8,000gns to Monzie Farms, Crieff, Perthshire. Upandunder was the best bull calf 2023 in the club herd competition and is sired by Guards Boomer. With a myostatin of F94L/NT821 and born in March 2023, Upandunder is another son out of a Icemaiden daughter, this time it was Pabo Mared, who has bred extremely consistently with progeny including the 15,000gns Pabo Oldspice and the 19,000gns Superspice.

Joining Ali Jackson in the show ring was keen shadow judge, Ryan Jones. Ryan did a superb job and thoroughly enjoyed his experience. We see a very talented judge in the making and wish him lots of luck developing his family herd, Tyisaf. Ryan has a keen eye for livestock judging which showed during the pre-sale show on Friday and produces show calves within his pedigree herd. Since purchasing Millgate Rob in 2021 he has helped shape his herd to produce winners. His successes so far include overall champion at Brecon Show Potential in 2023 and 2024.

Two females from the Goldies herd, Bruce Goldie, Dumfries and Galloway, were sold after the show on Friday, lot 1 Goldies Ursula sold for 7,000gns to Messrs Loveless, Bridport, Dorset. A Woodmarsh Regent daughter out of Goldies Pianist. Lot 2 Goldies Urgence, a Carrickmore Maximus daughter out of Goldies Jo, sold for 5,500gns and is off to breed for Messrs Potter, Faringdon, Oxfordshire. Both Females carry Q204X/Q204X myostatin genes.

To conclude Friday afternoon, Mary Cormack held a reduction sale of her show stars, with a highlight and top price of 14,000gns for Frogmore Ursula, bred by Chris White, Moreton-in-Marsh. A female with style and conformation and a hugely successful showing season this summer, winning interbreed junior champion at Devon County Show and reserve breed champion at Royal Cornwall show to name but a couple. Ursula was born January 2023 and is sired by the successful Loosebeare Master out of Frogmore Ruby, she carries the double F94L myostatin gene. Ursula is off to reside in Cumbria with Thor Atkinson.
