Pedigree and Commercial buyers were out in force showing continued demand for Limousin bulls across all type of enterprise at the 2025 May Bull Sale at United Auctions, Stirling.  A record average and clearance were the name of the game, with 93% of the 42 bulls forward heading to new homes at an average price of £8901, up £2201 on the year.   

Leading the day’s trade at 22,000gns was Lot 223 Anside Urban from Mr & Mrs S Irvine of the Anside herd near Keith who enjoyed a run of three top prices.   This stylish and solid Oct23-born bull was Senior and Overall, Champion the day before in the pre-sale show and caught the eye of a number of bidders.  Successful however, were Messrs Priestley of the pedigree Brontemoor herd so he heads home to Brampton near Cumbria.   Urban is a twin calf, with Myostatin F94L/Q204X, easy calving trait EBVs and a Beef Value in the Top 1% of the breed.   He was bred out of Anside Solero, a daughter of the herd’s own-bred bull Anside Orton and by Plumtree Fantastic.

Judge for the pre-sale show was Alistair Cormack from Leven in Fife.  Known across Limousin through the Meadowrig herd, Alistair was also stockman for many years for the renowned Carhurlie herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle belonging to the late Ray Grieve.   Of his Champion, Alistair said “It was an honour to be asked to judge the Limousin bulls at Stirling and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The quality was good throughout the classes. It was pleasing to see the Champion make the top price and the trade was fantastic from start to finish which shows the confidence in the breed. My Champion had tremendous width throughout, was good on his legs with a lovely head. I look forward to seeing what he produces for the Priestley family.”

This sale was a first at Stirling for new Society Chief Executive, Paul Rainey who said “The standard of bulls at Stirling has been very good and it has been a pleasure to attend for this first time and meet with so many breeders and buyers.  The sale reflects the demand for growth & conformation along with ease of calving which Limousin can produce in abundance.  That the commercial trade is willing to bid to the levels of today is testament to the value the breed adds to an enterprise.  Sincere thanks to all vendors, purchasers and underbidders”

Reserve Senior Champion in the pre-sale show and second top price of the day at 15,000gns was Lot 201 Goldies Uno from Mr B T Goldie, Mouswald, Dumfries.    Selling to the commercial herd of Messrs Shennan and Sons, Farden near Turnberry in Ayrshire, this July23-born bull is by Woodmarsh Regent out of Goldies Osogood, a Wilodge LJ daughter who is full sister to Goldies Orinoco, sold privately to the Whinfellpark herd.  Uno has Myostatin F94L/Q204X, easy calving EBVs and a Beef Value in the breed’s Top 10%.

Second at 15,000gns and second in a hattrick of prices over 10,000gns for Mr & Mrs S Irvine of the Anside herd was Lot 229 Anside Uian who was Reserve Junior Champion at the pre-sale show.  Born Nov23, Uian is by Grahams Rooney out of heifer Anside Ripple, a further daughter from the herd’s own-bred sire Anside Orton. With Myostatin F94L/Q204X and a Beef Value in the Top 10%, this bull headed to the commercial home of Messrs Steel & Co, Cumberhead near Lanark.

A further pedigree purchase secured the next top price of the day with Lot 203 Goldies Uniroyal from Mr B T Goldie heading to the Shannas herd of Mr & Mrs J Penny, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire at 14,000gns.    A further bull by Woodmarsh Regent, Uniroyal is out of Goldies Dame, an Ampertaine Bravo daughter who bred the Stirling Junior Champion, Goldies Rambler, in Feb22.  Born Aug23, Uniroyal has Myostatin F94L/F94L and a Beef Value and female fertility trait EBVs in the Top 1%.

Furthering the tremendous run for the Anside herd of Mr & Mrs S Irvine was the Nov23-born Lot 237 Anside UFC selling for 13,000gns.  With Myostatin Nt419/Q204X, easy calving EBVs and a Beef Value in the Top 1%, UFC is by Plumtree Fantastic out of Ionesco-bred daughter Anside  Phantazia who has previously sold at Stirling to 8,000gns.  He was also the second strong purchase of the day for the commercial herd of Messrs Shennan and Sons, Turnberry, Ayrshire who had already bought the Reserve Senior Champion Goldies Uno above,

Three bulls then followed at 12,000gns.  The first of these through the ring was Lot 193 Dyke Uluru from Messrs J R MacGregor of the Dyke herd, Kilsyth.   Bred by stock sire Goldies Lordoftherings out of a Goldies Juggler daughter, Goldies Prettygirl, this Jun23 born bull has Myostatin F94L/Q204X and is a further bull with easy calving trait EBVs.  He heads to the commercial home of Messrs J & JP McCall, Blinkbonny, Pittenweem, Fife. 

Dyke Uluru

Never far away from top honours at Stirling was the Maraiscote herd of Mr J Nimmo with Lot 218  Maraiscote Uttoxeter.  Second in his class to the pre-sale Champion, he secured the second of the 12,000gns prices of the day.    Sold to the commercial herd of Mr M Meldrum, Shenval, Ballindalloch, Banffshire, this Oct23-born bull has Myostatin F94L/Q204X and is by the herd’s renowned Bassingfield Machoman out of Maraiscote Nemma, a Goldies Comet daughter.

Rounding up the last of the sales at 12,000gns was Lot 227 Strawfrank Ullman from Mr A Campbell, Strawfrank, Carstairs, Lanark.   Born Nov23, Ullman goes back to proven breeding with sire Ionesco and is out Strawfrank Rihanna, bred by Foxhillfarm Jasper.  With Myostatin F94L/F94L Ullman has calving traits and beef value in the Top 10% and Top 1% respectively.  He also heads to a commercial home, across the Pentland Firth to Messrs T&J Leslie, Quoymor House, Shapinsay, Orkney.

Next leading price was again from the Maraiscote herd of Mr J Nimmo, Wishaw with Lot 215 Maraiscote Ultravox selling for 10,000gns.  He didn’t have far to travel, heading home to the commercial herd of Messrs W Russell & Sons, Bankhead Farm, Carnwath, Lanarkshire.   Born Oct23, Ultravox is a further animal with easy calving trait EBVs and Myostatin F94L/F94L.  He is by the herd’s stock sire Morhan Peter out Maraiscote Radical, a daughter bred by further stock sire Sliabh Felim Mourinho.
