The Allams Christmas Fatstock Show & Sale, held on Tuesday 27th November 2012 at the Balmoral Showgrounds, Belfast, Northern Ireland saw Limousin entries take the top award and secure a string of Championship titles.
The Supreme Championship went to the Senior Limousin Steer, Del Boy, bred by Jack Smyth, Newtownstewart. Winning the Limousin Championship earlier in the day, this 760kg steer was sired by Milbrook Dartangan, a Wilodge Vantastic son. The Champion animal then went on to make a new record price at this event of £6,600 when bought by judge Peter Hannan, the Meat Merchant, based in Moira.
The Show had an entry of 100 prime cattle and 40 top-class calves and once again the continental breeds led the charge in terms of numbers with the Limousin being the predominant breed.
Judging of the ever-popular Ulster Housewife’s Choice Championship was put in the hands of the father and son team of Will & Gareth Corrie, Newtownards. After judging all eligible animals from classes 1-20, a short lead of 7 animals emerged with 5 of them being Limousin crosses. Finally, the judges selected Limousins as their Housewife’s Champion, Reserve Housewife’s Champion and the Best Opposite Sex Champion – all Limousin-bred.
Taking the Housewife’s Championship was a senior Limousin heifer owned by Joel Richardson, Annaghmore which went on to fetch £3,700 in the sale on behalf of purchasers P & N Meats, Maghera. The Reserve Housewife’s Championship went to Danny Dolan, Castlederg for his baby Limousin heifer, Rua. Thirteen months old, this heifer was sired by Wilodge Tonka and bred out of a Limousin x Blue dam with Rocky bloodlines. She also went under the hammer to P & N Meats, Maghera for £2,700.
Best Opposite Sex to the Housewife’s Choice went to Declan McKenna, Clogher for his fourteen-month-old baby Limousin steer Blackjack. This steer is sired by the French-bred Limousin bull Silex owned by Ayrshire cattle breeder Hugh Dunlop and is out of a Limousin x Blue dam. Blackjack went on to fetch £2,000 at the sale selling to the Morning Star Restaurant, Belfast.
Other prizewinning Limousin cattle included: the Baby Limousin Heifer class winner from Crawford & Beattie, Newtownstewart, sired by Rocky; the Baby Limousin Steer winner Tyson’s Fury bred by John F Killen, Crossgar, sired by Guards Boomer; the Limousin Bullock Calf class winner Don’t Push It bred by John F Killen, Crossgar, sired by Rocky; the Limousin Heifer Calf class winner Ace of Clubs bred by D Johnston, Lisgoole Abbey, Fermanagh; and the Senior Limousin Heifer winner from Gerard Law, Kesh.
