The British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) Breeders’ Sale on behalf of four pedigree Limousin herds held on Saturday 1st June 2013 at Borderway Mart, Carlisle saw a top price of 17,000gns for the rising nineteen-month-old heifer, Grahams Gayla. A big crowd of both new and established buyers saw a buoyant trade for the predominantly female lots forward which were offered with a depth of pedigree breeding behind them. Altogether, the 81 lots sold to a gross of £332,850 or £4,109 per head for a near-total clearance.
The 17,000gns sale leader was Grahams Gayla from Mr & Mrs R&J Graham, Airthrey Kerse Farm, Bridge of Allan, Stirling when purchased for the Brockhurst Herd of WJ & M Mash Ltd, Torrington Farm, Grove Lane, Chesham, Bucks. November 2011-born, this maiden heifer is by Baileys Elderado, a Queenshead Altea son, and is out of the French dam, Cavaliere. She was sold with a Beef Value of LM+30 and will be shown at this year’s Highland Show. Messrs Mash had earlier bought the first lot in the ring, Grahams Gold, sired by the homebred Grahams Alexander and out of Ulala, dam of the 10,000gns Grahams Chelsea, for 4,000gns. This one was sold AI’d to, and having run with, the 30,000gns Goldies Black Forever as were the next three leading prices from the Grahams Herd: the 7,500gns Grahams Gemini, by Millgate Clinker and out of Grahams Donna, when knocked down to DE Evans, Monfa, Gwernaffield Road, Mold, Clwyd; the similarly-bred Grahams Gina (Millgate Clinker x Grahams Evelyn) when snapped up for 6,500gns by the Lochend Herd of A Morton, Lochend Farm, Denny, Stirling; and the 6,000gns Grahams Glory (Millgate Clinker x Grahams Diamond) when purchased by J Galbraith & Son, Upper Kinneil, Linlithgow, W.Lothian for their Galbraiths Herd. Later in the sale, Messrs Galbraith snapped up the 6,200gns Goldies Geranium, an April 2011-born embryo calf by Wilodge Vantasic and out of Goldies Bride (by Nenuphar), which was sold in-calf to Kaprico Germander. Making it three purchases in all for DE Evans’ Esmors Herd were two animals at 5,000gns: Grahams Georgia, by the 30,000gns Millgate Clinker and out of Grahams Eureka; and Grahams Gabrielle (Millgate Clinker x Saunders Edwina) with both being in-calf to Goldies Black Forever, the world record-priced black Limousin bull purchased jointly by the Grahams and Roxburgh Herds at Carlisle in February 2012.
Leading the Goldies consignment on behalf of Mr BT Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries was the 12,000gns heifer calf, Goldies Imagination. Just five-months-old and sold suckling her recipient dam, this January 2013-born embryo calf, described as “something special and an outstanding heifer calf”, is by the 20,000gns sire, Ampertaine Commander, and out of Goldies Beauty, dam of the October 2011 Carlisle Supreme Champion, the 22,000gns Goldies Fandango. Purchaser for the Gunnerfleet Herd was J Handley, Gunnerfleet Farm, Chapel le Dale, Carnforth, Lancs. The same-way-bred embryo bull calf, the rising five-month-old Goldies Investment, secured a final bid of 3,500gns when bought by ME & EJ Simcock, Marsh Farm, Preston Wynne, Hereford for their Marsh prefix. Heading to Northern Ireland was another embryo calf packed with breeding, Goldies Heiress, this time by the 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic and out of the prolific Goldies Vitality, making her a full sister to the 21,000gns Goldies Goldfinger, the 23,000gns Goldies Comet and the 15,000gns Goldies First. February 2012-born, Goldies Heiress sold for 7,000gns with a Beef Value of LM+43 to WJ Bradley, Drumard Road, Knockloughrim, Magherafelt, Co.Londonderry for the Drumard Herd. An identical pedigree was behind the 6,800gns Goldies Grace, another ET heifer calf born March 2011, when secured by the Annanview Herd of K Watret, Northfield Park, Annan, Dumfriesshire. She was sold scanned in-calf to the 10,000gns Kaprico Germander.
Two young bulls led the bidding for the Haltcliffe offering on behalf of Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Cumbria. At the 10,000gns mark was Haltcliffe Hercules, a January 2012-born namesake of the noted 1992-born Broadmeadows Cannon son with over 1,000 progeny registered in the BLCS Herdbook. Back to the present day, this 2012-born son of the 100,000gns Haltcliffe Vermount and out of Cloughhead Romany, is full brother to the 15,000gns Haltcliffe Dynamo and now heads to the Brenig Herd of ML Howatson, Ty Newydd, Nantglyn, Denbigh, Clwyd. Heading to Kenmuir Farmers, Ardwell, Stranraer, Wigtownshire at 6,000gns was the other young Haltcliffe bull in the shape of the November 2011-born Haltcliffe Gulf (Cloughhead Umpire x Haltcliffe Brenda by Sympa).
