Spittalton Griffin from Stirling based breeders J G Burnett & Son, Upper Spittalton, Blair Drummond made 10,500gns and led the bull trade at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s summer sale of bulls at Borderway Mart on Friday 15th June.

December 2011 born, Spittalton Griffin is by the 72,000gns Haltcliffe DJ and is out of the Wilodge Vantastic sired Spittalton Danielle.  With a Beef Value of LM+37, the top price bull was purchased by Messrs KI&E Jones, Bryn Ddraenen, Padog, Betws-Y-Coed, Conwy to join the noted Garnedd Herd.

Speaking after the sale Ken Jones commented on his purchase and said:  “The bull has a great top, he’s well muscled, has plenty of width, is clean, and has good locomotion.  He also has a terrific pedigree behind him”.  The bull will be initially used on the Jones’ crossbred cows before being introduced into the 70 pedigree females within the Garnedd herd.

This traditional fixture, some six weeks beyond the breed’s premier May Sale at Carlisle, saw 20 of the 29 bulls forward sell to a good average of £4242, up by £387 on the year.  Five bulls in all made 5000gns or more.

Selling at 6,600gns, from a good team of bulls, was Fieldson Gobsmacker from Messrs JW & M Fieldson, Poplar Farm, Corringham, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.  Sired by Fieldson Erasure, a Haltcliffe Bravo son, this December 2011 born bull is out of the Goldies Uppercrust dam, Fieldson Candy.  Another bull with a high beef value, LM+40, Fieldson Gobsmacker was purchased by S Ewart & Son, Belridding Farm, Torthorwald, Dumfries.    The Fieldsons saw five of their young bulls go through the ring to make a very healthy average of £5124.

Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Wigton, Cumbria made 6000gns when selling the February 2012 born Haltcliffe Hudson.  This young bull, a son of the 34,000gns Cloughhead Ernie, is out of the Cloughhead Umpire sired Haltcliffe Eden.  Sold with a beef value of LM+26, Haltcliffe Hudson was purchased by GR&G Brass, Bridge End Farm, Soulby, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.

Two bulls made 5000gns and both came from the Messrs JW&M Fieldson team.  A bull with plenty of shape, Fieldson Guna was another by the AI sire Cloughhead Umpire and is out of the Gunnerfleet Plunas daughter Fieldson Una.  This November 2011 born bull was purchased jointly by Mr C Richens of the Broadoak pedigree herd, Coppa Dolla Farm, Broadhempston, Totnes, along with CP Groves who runs the Voxham pedigree herd at Higher Farm, Sutton Mallet, Bridgwater, Somerset.

The second at the 5000gns mark was Fieldson Hobnob.  January 2012 born, this bull is by the homebred Fieldson Erasure, a son of Haltcliffe Bravo.  He is out of Fieldson Cinderella whose dam is Eden Natasha the mother of the 37,000gns Fieldson Alfy.  Sold with a beef value of LM+40, Fieldson Hobnob was purchased by Edward JC Dean, for the pedigree Kirkhouse herd at  Kirkhouse, Brampton, Cumbria.

Continuing their strong trade, Messrs Fieldson also sold Fieldson Hummer for 4800gns.  Another son of Fieldson Erasure, Hummer is out of the homebred Goldies Uppercrust daughter, Fieldson Delia.  This bull, January 2012 born, went to Powys when selling to DE Morgan & Co, Cefn Twlch Farm, New Mills, Newtown.

Messrs RM&HJ Lewis, Lewis Farming, Nash Farm, Cleobury Mortimer, Salop, also made 4800gns when selling the September 2011 born Redland Gameboy.  Gameboy, a heifer’s calf, is by the French sire Bouquet who was purchased from the Lanaud Test station for 14,000 Euros.  Out of Redland Damsell, Redland Gameboy was purchased by Dunstall Estate, Old Hall, Dunstall, Burton-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

With females to come later, Messrs J Logan, Humebyres, Kelso kicked off their day when selling Homebyres Goodwin for 4200gns.  This August 2011 born bull is an AI son of the 32,000gns Dolcorsllwyn Brynmor and is out of the Homebyres Vanhee daughter Homebyres Ellie.  With a beef value of LM+30, this bull was bought by JJ Paterson, Langholm.
