The Red Ladies sale closes the British Limousin Cattle Society calendar for another year with 35 females and 50 weaned calves forward after the inspection ready to be sold on Friday the 13th of December. A fantastic trade for some, as the females averaged £5,902, with a clearance rate of 94%.
Ladybowers Unique
Taking the top price at this year’s sale was Lot 8, Ladybowers Unique who sold for 18,000gns. This second-placed winning heifer was bred by Mr L White, Bamford, South Yorkshire. Sired by Ladybowers Ohio and out of an Ampertaine Foreman daughter, Grahams Marjorie, who was purchased at Red Lades herself in 2017 for 10,000gns. Great Grand Sire Foxhillfarm Manhattan sold for 35,000gns after standing junior champion and reserve overall champion at Carlisle May 2017. Unique’s bloodlines go back to the multi award winning Foxhillfarm Gracie and Bankdale Alice. This double Q204X female is destined to be an asset to her new owners Messrs Campbell, Lochgoilhead, Cairndow.

Choosing the rosette winners was the knowledgeable judge, Jennifer Hyslop from Settle, North Yorkshire. Jennifer is a freelance stockwoman who has gained many years of experience breeding, showing and selling both Pedigree and Commercial cattle of her own and for some of the top breeders in the country.
Mereside Unicorn
Today her champion choice was Mereside Unicorn from RM Hazards and Sons, she sold for 12,000gns. Jennifer described her as “a well-balanced, showy and an all-round show beast. She will make a very good cow”. Unicorn, a January 2023 born heifer, is a Jalex Superman daughter out of a homebred cow called Mereside Olivia. Bred in Skillington, Lincolnshire she is off to breed for Messrs Cairns, Tollerton, Nottingham. Unicorn is in the top 10% of the breed for Beef Value of LM41, carries the NT821/NT821 myostatin gene and has a bright future ahead of her.
Duncan Hazard commented that “This champion prize means a lot to the family”. This is the first time they have brought heifers to Carlisle, usually sticking to the bulls. The family has been breeding Limousins since Duncan was a baby. They have struggled with the Blue Tongue restrictions, and he thanks Drew Hyslop for taking on his cattle, Duncan said he “can’t commend him enough”. This will be a great Christmas for the Hazard family.
Hollowdene Ullay
Lot 30, Hollowdene Ulay, went under the hammer for 14,000gns selling to Messrs Perkins, Terry Hill, Redstock. Sold by owner, Mary Cormack, she is the last heifer to be sold by the Rougemont herd and has a bright show and breeding career in front of her. She was shown for the first time this Autumn at the Stars of the Future show and fetched a well-deserved first place rosette. Sired by Claddagh McCabe, an Ampertaine Foreman son and out of the cow Milbrook Gingerspice. Ullay is out of the cow Norman Lacey, a Claragh Franco daughter.
Goldies Uhazel
The reserve champion spot was taken by Bruce and Linda’s red lady, Goldies Uhazel, in the catalogue as Lot 20. She is a very stylish heifer out of Goldies Hazel, a Sympa daughter. Uhazel is sired by Woodmarsh Regent, a son of Ampertaine Foreman who has consistently bred progeny up to 30,000gns. The hammer went down to Messrs Nichol, Gosforth, Seascale, for 8,000gns, who will welcome this April 23 born, F94L/Q204X gene carrying female into his herd.
After the pre-sale show Jennifer commented “The overall standard of cattle was very good and the younger cattle classes were very strong”, she thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to judge.
Grahams Undine
Following later in the lots was 8,500gns selling heifer, Grahams Undine. Bred by Mr and Mrs R & J Graham, Bridge of Allan, Stirling, she is off to her new home in Messrs Cairns, Tollerton, Nottingham. This heifer carries Q204X/Q204X and was born in June 2023. Undine is a daughter of the famous Grahams Coffee who has bred multiple sale toppers and show champions. Undine was first in her class at the Scottish Grand Prix. Sired by Burnbank Officer, this embryo calf has impressive breeding.
Goldies Tinsel
Goldies Tinsel, Lot 5, was the first to sell for Bruce and Linda Goldie. Selling for 8,000gns to Messrs Bowe & Son, Northallerton. This December 2022 born female is sired by Woodmarsh Regent and out of Goldies Jasmine, combining the outstanding female lines of Millington Highlight and Goldies Vitality. Goldies Jasmine also bred Goldies Omaria top price online sale £10,800. Tinsel has a myostatin pairing of F94L/Q204X.
Perth Una
Lot 14, Perth Una, sold for 7,000gns. Bred by Mr Sion Wyn Jones, this March 2023 born heifer is off to breed for Messrs Perkins, Terry Hill, Radstock. Sired by Plumtree Fantastic and out of Perth OMG, claimed first prize in the pre-sale show. Una carries the double Q204X myostatin gene.
Lot 25, Grahams Una, sold for 6,500gns. Bred by R & J Graham and sold to Messrs Mackinnon, Dunfoot. A second-place winning female by Goldies Jackpot and out of Grahams Ripple, she was born May 2023 and carries F94L/Q204X myostatin gene.
Lot 7, Barrons Una sold for 6,200gns. Bred by Mr W Barron and sold to Messrs Bowe & Son, Northallerton, North Yorkshire. This heifer is sired by Kinniside Novel and out of Barrons Rachael. Una carries F94L/Q204X myostatin gene.
Lot 35, Maraiscote Uggs, sold for 6,000gns. Carrying F94L/Q204X myostatin gene, she is bred by Mr Ian Nimmo and sold to Lotherton Estates, Lotherton, Leeds. This heifer was awarded first prize in her pre-sale class, sired by Morhan Peter and out of Maraiscote Penelope.
Weaned calves
The sale of the weaned calves followed straight after the Red Ladies sale. They averaged £3,580 with a clearance of 90%.
Glenrock Vesuvius
First placed female calf was claimed by Lot 69, Glenrock Vesuvius, bidding erupted as she was sold for a top price of 15,000gns. This mighty calf is bred by Stephen and Thomas Illingworth, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie and goes onto bred for Messrs Wison, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Vesuvius is by the renowned bull Powerful Irish, who has bred champions and progeny who have sold to 25,000gns, and is out of Eagleside Lafayette.
Hightown Volvo
The second highest priced calf to sell was a bull calf named Hightown Volvo, Lot 61, sold by Mr J Smith-Jackson, Chesterwood, Hexham for 8,000gns to Messrs Hardisty, Cleator, Cumbria. This calf is sired by Huntershall Romanus and out of Garnedd Model. Volvo is a February born bull calf who carries NT821 and Q204X myostatin genes.
