MILBROOK & CARRICKALDREEN ANIMALS WIN ALL-IRELAND DERBY
A tremendous showcase of Limousin cattle from both Northern and Southern Ireland was presented at the All-Ireland Bull & Heifer Derby held at Clogher Show on Wednesday 29th July 2009 where for the third year in succession William Smith of Oldcastle, Co Meath won the Ulster Bank All-Ireland heifer title. Peter Murphy took the prestigious award of the top All-Ireland bull sponsored by Teemore Engineering with Carrickaldreen Dallywag, a Pacha 19 January 2008 son.
Judge for the day, Peter Henshall, said that the depth of females in the line-up was superb and Irish breeders were to be congratulated in producing stock of such high breeding quality. In selecting Milbrook Celine as his Heifer Champion, he remarked that she was a tremendous heifer with style, scope and in fact an all round female.

Millbrook Celine, much admired at last year’s Beef Expo Ireland, has an excellent pedigree. Her dam, Millbrook Ulla, is a daughter of former stock bull, Poker, and is out of Millbrook Petal, Senior Heifer Champion and Overall Reserve Female Champion at Tullamore in 2006, and the Reserve Overall Champion at Beef Expo 2008. Her sire, Greensons Gigolo, is a renowned breeder of quality pedigree Limousin cattle and the fifth most prolific bull of all time in the British herdbook.

Peter Murphy, Mill Road, Mullaghbawn, Newry, Co Armagh took the All-Ireland Bull Derby with Carrickaldreen Dallywag. He is sired by Pacha 19 who also sired Mr Murphy’s third prizewinner in last year’s corresponding Derby in Virginia. Dallywag’s mother, Carrickaldreen Alice was herself third in the 2006 heifer derby, as well as being Junior Champion and best exhibitor bred Limousin at Balmoral in 2006. Dallywag, who has a Beef Value of LM+21, was described by the judge as a worthy winner in an excellent line-up of young bulls. He had style, a good top line, width and good locomotion even in soft conditions and is destined for Carlisle or Stirling later in the year.
Two rings ran simultaneously judging the ‘Northern’ and ‘Southern’ animals which had to be shown separately due to DARD veterinary regulations. The top heifers and bulls from each side of the border then went head to head to decide the overall winners.

Mr Henshall selected Raymond Crawford’s Erne Cinderella as his top Northern heifer which went on to take Overall Reserve. Interestingly this heifer is sired by Milbrook Vic, bred by William Smith at Oldcastle and now the senior stock bull with Ian Davidson’s Ballyrickard herd at Larne. Erne Cinderella had qualified at Armagh Show and was a stylish heifer with plenty of scope. Peter Henshall selected Michael Molloy’s heifer Mullary Chantelle, a Shire Milton daughter in third place.
Noel Fennessy from Co Limerick with Wood Road Donald, second in the Teemore Engineering All-Ireland Bull Derby, being congratulated by Nicky Johnston. |
In Reserve spot in the Bull Derby was a Sympa son, Wood Road Donald the youngest bull in the class from Noel Fennessy, who had travelled up from Castleconnell, Co Limerick. The judge then chose Culnagechan Douglas, shown by Gary Hume for his father Derek, as his third place bull. Douglas is a powerful, stylish son of Cloughhead Umpire and out of Kype Vicky.
