The NI Young Limousin Breeders Club are preparing for the 10th Anniversary of their Young Handlers Competition and Calf Spectacular to be held on Saturday 17th September in Moira Pedigree Sales Arena.
The primary purpose of the event is to encourage the participation of young members and at the same time develop their knowledge of cattle breeding and showmanship skills. This has proved effective as the Club grows in membership and achievements year-to-year.
The show is split into three sections: the Young Handlers Competition; the Pedigree Calf Spectacular and the Commercial Limousin Calf Championship. The Young Handlers Competition is open to all young breeders under the age of 30 years, and the Calf Spectacular consists of seven pedigree classes, including calves born from 1st September 2010 to 1st September 2011 together with a progeny class for a group of three calves from the same sire.
This year, Kathryn Lawson, Windsole Limousins, will have the difficult task of selecting the prize-winners in the main events, alongside Stephen Clyde, Clydevalley Limousins and Assistant Farm Manager of Livestock Development Unit CAFRE, who will judge the dressing of the young members’ calves for the Young Handlers Competition.
“The Young Handlers Competition and Calf Spectacular would not be possible without the generous support of the sponsors who not only provide monetary reward but give of their time on the day of the show to congratulate prize winners,” said a spokesperson.
Sponsors this year include: Animax, British Limousin Cattle Society, Corries Farm Butchers, Firmount Veterinary, Greenmount Country Stores, John Thompsons, McKinstry Skip Hire, Northern Ireland Limousin Club, Semenstore, Spires Veterinary, Ulster Bank and United Auctions.
In an addition to this year’s event the YLBNI are hosting the prestigious Anglo-Irish Stockjudging Competition which attracts competitors from the UK Mainland,Southern IrelandandNorthern Ireland. Each team region will comprise of three young members who will compete in a Young Handlers Competition and Stockjudging Competition where the points will be accumulated to find the winning team and individual.
