Cooper coup at Northern Limousin Extravaganza

The North Yorkshire-based Tomschoice pedigree herd of James and Sarah Cooper again excelled at the 2011 Northern Limousin Extravaganza (NLE) at Skipton Auction Mart on Tuesday 10th May.

James Cooper with his 2011 Northern Limousin Extravaganza supreme champion, joined by judge Christine Williams.

As in past years, the Coopers, of Dacre, Harrogate, figured prominently among the leading honours, including a pedigree male and supreme championship coup with Tomschoice Fortune, a 15-month-old son of the renowned Haltcliffe Vermount, bred in Wigton, Cumbria, by the Ridley family and sold for a world record £100,000 to Procters Farms, of Slaidburn, Clitheroe.

Haltcliffe Vermount was also responsible for the Coopers’ 2010 male victor, Tomschoice Elgar, later crowned Great Yorkshire show champion, before selling for 13,000gns at Carlisle in October 2010.

The dam of the 2011 Skipton title winner is Tomschoice Aristocrat, a daughter of Ronick Member. The maternal brother toTomschoice Fortune, Tomschoice Earl by Sympa, another star of the Ridley’s Haltcliffe herd, was sold last year by the Coopers for 10,000gns after becoming inter-breed champion at Nidderdale Show.

With another bull from the same cow family, the Coopers were also responsible for the reserve pedigree male champion, Tomschoice Fashionabull, a January, 2010, born son of Sympa,

The dam is a daughter of the Welsh bull Sarkley Topknot, Great Yorkshire champion in 2004, who also sired the Coopers’ 2010 pedigree and reserve supreme champion heifer, Tomschoice Emily.

With a strong entry in this year’s NLE, the Coopers also clinched the reserve female championship with their 16-month-old heifer Tomschoice Fragrance, by Greenwell Manager, out of Tomschoice Chanel, again by Sarkley Topknot.

OVERALL RESERVE SHOW CHAMPION – Millington Grange Lot 10
Millington Grange Estate’s John Weatherill with his 2011 Northern Limousin Extravaganza reserve supreme champion, joined by judge Christine Williams.

Millington Grange Estate, east of York, presented the pedigree female champion and reserve supreme champion, Millington Favourite, a February, 2010-born daughter of the AI sire Mas Du Clo, out of Brockhurst Option.

Exhibited by Millington Grange Estate owner John Weatherill, the Skipton runner-up is a full sister to the famed 2009 NLE supreme champion Millington Davina, who went on to become junior inter-breed champion at the Great Yorkshire Show, followed by the junior and overall Limousin championship at the Royal Show, before selling for 28,000gns.

Daniel Rice

In the commercial section for Limousin-sired entrants, there were first prize successes in the heifer classes for two West Yorkshire exhibitors – the Rice family, from Carlton, Yeadon, and a 12-month-old son of Hafodias Caio from Steven and Ruth Priestley’s Brontemoor herd at Denholme, Bradford, which also won first prize in the pedigree pairs class.

The former, C-N-Red, a 13-month-old daughter of Rossignol, bred in Cumbria by W Richardson & Sons, Laverock Bridge, and acquired by the Rices in March, went on to secure the commercial championship in the hands of Daniel Rice. Rossignol’s first calf for the Rice family was commercial champion at the 2005 Great Yorkshire Show.

Reserve commercial champion was the first prize Limousin-sired bullock from Edward Fawcett, of C R Fawcett, Kissthorn Farm, Sand Hutton, York, and bred in the same area by Garrowby Estate at Stamford.

The Northern Limousin Extravaganza signalled the start of the Limousin cattle show season in Yorkshire in what is the breed’s milestone 40th anniversary year.

Open to both pedigree and commercial Limousin cattle born in 2010, it gave youngsters with future show potential a valuable first experience of the exhibition arena. Prize money totalled £2,000.

Many of the Skipton principals could well be set for further honours this year on exhibition circuit.  In previous years, animals entered for the NLE have gone on to land major prizes at some of the country’s most prestigious shows.

An open stock judging competition organised by the North East Limousin Breeders Club was won by xxxxxxxxxxxx (name and location please), while the event also enabled pre-sale viewing of cattle entered for the following day’s premier ‘Red Event,’ the annual Spring show and sale of pedigree Limousin bulls and females.

NLE show judge was Christine Williams, of the noted Wilodge herd in Shifnal, Shrophshire, who commented: “It was a very good show of cattle, with the victor demonstrating everything I like in an animal – class and style, good balance and legs. He came in and owned the ring with his ‘look at me’ factor. The commercials were also of exceptional quality.”

NLE sponsors were AON, Bishopton Veterinary Group, British Limousin Cattle Society, Elite Beef Semen, I’Anson Bros, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, LEBC Group, Natural Stockcare, North East Limousin Breeders Club, Redcliffe Computers, Ripon Land Rover, Ripon Select Foods, Showtime, Tithebarn, Tomschoice Limousins, Yorkshire Agricultural Society, and Zintec.
