In a week of celebrations of the Limousin Society’s 50th Anniversary, all descended on H&H Borderway mart for two days of spectacular commercial and pedigree shows on 29th and 30th July 2022.

Supreme Champion Upperffrydd Power and Reserve Supreme Champion Foxhillfarm Naomi with judge Paul Sykes, the Thor Atkinson team and the Alford Team (left to right)

In the pedigree section, it was Upperffrydd Power who literally powered through to the Overall Pedigree Championship. In the run up to the event there had been increasing speculation whether this three-year old bull would lift the title, having already claimed championships at the Royal Welsh and Great Yorkshire Shows this season. Brought out to perfection by owner Thor Atkinson and his team of the Arradfoot pedigree herd, Power was bred by Tomos Evans of the Upperffrydd herd in Powys and sold to Mr Atkinson for 3,000gns in Carlisle in October 2020. He is sired by the record-breaking price Trueman Jagger, who won the last National Show in 2016, and out of the noted Foxhillfarm Joslyn. A very nice bonus on the day saw Power’s first calf – Arradfoot Salvador – also lift the Reserve Junior Male title; a fantastic kick-start to his breeding career.

Commercial Overall Champion Maggie

Coming up through the heavyweight heifer classes and claiming the Overall Commercial Championship was Limousin-bred heifer Maggie.  A March 2021-born calf by noted sire Trueman Idol, she was bred and exhibited by B&L Wilkinson, Ivy Farm, Leyburn, North Yorks.

In the hot seats were judges Jim Quail from Northern Ireland (commercial heifers), Louise Forsyth from Scotland (commercial steers), Christian Laloi from France (pedigree females) and Paul Sykes from Ireland (pedigree males).  In a marathon across the two days they saw their way through twenty three main classes, 11 championships and three special classes.

Commenting on the event, Craig Ridley, the BLCS Honorary President said “This is a superb occasion for the Limousin breed.  It has been present in the UK for fifty years and dominant within the beef sector for the majority of that time.   The show of cattle here today – both pedigree and commercial – represents what has been achieved by the breed in that time and is the very best showcase of what it can offer.   Carcase quality, maternal ability and versatility are what it is all about and we have bloodlines on show – old and new – that deliver these facets to industry day-in-day-out, year-in-year-out.   A sincere thank you to all exhibitors, judges, sponsors and those attending simply to support.   All present are part of the UK Limousin story so far and what it will deliver in the future”

THE BLCS 50TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW CHAMPIONS AND RESULTS

PEDIGREE SECTION

Senior Male, Overall Male and Supreme Limousin Champion

Upperffrydd Power bred by Tomos Evans and owned by Thor Atkinson, Arradfoot

Senior Female, Overall Female and Reserve Supreme Limousin Champion

Needing little introduction, Foxhillfarm Naomi is a 2017-born Trueman Jagger daughter out of Foxhillfarm Isla and is bred and owned by Mr & Mrs M Alford, Cullompton, Devon.  In 2019, as a two year old heifer she won seven breed championships including the Royal Welsh , the Highland and the Great Yorkshire Show – becoming a Triple Crown winner in doing so – and also claimed six interbreed titles.

Senior Male and Reserve Overall Male Champion

Standing Senior Male Champion and Reserve Overall Male Champion to Upperffrydd Power was the 2020-born Deveronvale Razzledazzle bred by Mr G Morrison, from Banff in Aberdeenshire.  Purchased by Mr S Wilson of the Impulsive pedigree herd, Corby Hill, Carlisle for 24,000gns in at the Carlisle May sale earlier in the year, Razzledazzle already has show success under his belt winning the Junior Male and Reserve Overall Championships at the Royal Highland Show in June.

Junior Male Champion

The Junior Male Champion for the day was Pabo Superspice bred by Llyr & Peredur Hughes from Anglesey.   This February 2021-born bull is by Derrygullinane Kingbull out of homebred cow Pabo Mared and was sold at the Carlisle Limousin sale in May this year for 19,000gns to WD Wright & Sons, Parkgate, Dumfries.   Another bull with show success in the bag this year, Superspice was Junior and Male Reserve Champion at the Royal Welsh Show just a few weeks ago.

Reserve Junior Male Champion

A strong Reserve Junior Male Champion to Pabo Superspice was Arradfoot Salvador, bred and owned by Thor Atkinson, Arradfoot, Ullswater.   The icing on the cake for the Arradfoot team, this smart Oct-21 bull is the first calf born by their Supreme Champion, Upperffrydd Power, out of Greenferns Lucky, purchased by Mr Atkinson in 2017.

Reserve Senior and Overall Female Champion

The Reserve Overall Female Champion to Foxhillfarm Naomi was Haltcliffe Romance bred and owned by Craig Ridley of the Haltcliffe herd, Hesket Newmarket, Wigton.  Born in June 2020, she is sired by the herd’s successful stock bull Westpit Omaha out of homebred cow Haltcliffe Onampa.  These go back to well-known bloodlines including Ampertaine Foreman, Cloughhead Umpire, Wilodge Cerberus and Haltcliffe Vermount.

Intermediate Female Champion

Intermediate Female Champion for the day was Goldies Stephanie bred and owned by Bruce Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries.    Born in February 2021, Stephanie is sired by the herd’s own-bred Goldies Nimble – a Goldies Juggler son – out of Goldies Foxtrot.   Foxtrot is a daughter of the renowned Wilodge Tonka, with Goldies Terence breeding on her dam’s side.

Reserve Intermediate Female Champion

The scopey Dinmore Solovely bred was reserve on the day to Goldies Stephanie.  Born in January 2021, she was bred by Paul Dawes of the Dinmore herd, Herefordshire and sold in the latter part of 2021 to exhibitor Messrs AK & JK Smith.   By homebred sire Dinmore Orly and out of dam Dinmore Mylovely, she goes back to French sire Luron on her sire’s side and Wilodge Vantastic on her dam’s side.

Junior Female Champion

The Junior Female Champion title went home to John Nimmo of the Maraiscote herd near Wishaw, with a sweet June 2021-born heifer Maraiscote Sorbet.  No stranger to a ticket on her headcollar having already been placed in her class at the Royal Highland Show in June, she is by the herd’s successful sire Bassingfield Machoman out of Maraiscote Jellybelly.

Reserve Junior Female Champion

Standing Reserve Junior Female Champion to Maraiscote Sorbet was Lowflan Storm bred and exhibited by Messrs I Wilson & C Wood. A smart May 2021-born heifer, she is sired by Ironstone Gandi out of homebred cow Lowflan Joy. Breeding here goes back to the famous Wilodge Vantastic and Bailea Umandy on the sire’s side, with Kingshaugh and Ironstone breeding on the dam’s side.
