Loosebeare Golddust from Messrs EW Quick & Sons, Loosebeare Manor, Zeal Monachorum, Crediton, Devon, made 5,700gns and topped the British Limousin Cattle Society’s May Bull Sale held at Brecon Livestock Market with McCartneys on Saturday 11th May 2013. He had earlier been put up as Senior and Overall Supreme Champion in the pre-sale show judged by Mr Stephen Illingworth of the noted Glenrock Herd at Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, Dumfries.

August 2011-born, Loosebeare Golddust is by the herd’s stock bull, the 4,000gns Gronw Cheeky, a Scordale Terry son, and is out of the Rainbow Simon daughter, Loosebeare Cayley, making him a half-brother to the 6,800gns second top price at the Brecon November 2012 sale. He sold with a Beef Value of LM+30 and a Calving Value of LM+1C to the 50-cow pedigree Moonleaze Herd of JJ & BD Comer, New Moonleaze Farm, Braydon, Swindon, Wilts. “He was bought for his good, hard muscling and easy calving bloodlines and will be used on a dozen or so heifers later this spring,” said purchaser Jeff Comer. Cementing a good day’s trade, Messrs Quick sold subsequent bulls at 4300gns, 4000gns and 3200gns respectively.

A very solid commercial trade saw 18 more bulls sold on the year with 48 bulls overall levelling at £3,767. A smaller draft of mainly heifers saw 21 average £1,551 with the sale overall grossing well over £200,000. The British Limousin Cattle Society bull trade this May has seen 228 bulls go under the hammer to gross just over £1 Million (£1,019,248) at Brecon, Ballymena, Stirling & Carlisle respectively.

Securing a final bid of 5,600gns was Killerton Gauge on behalf of Mr & Mrs PW & SM Greed, Columbjohn Farm Ltd, Rewe, Exeter, Devon. Earlier in the day this November 2011-born bull had won the Junior section before moving on to be awarded Reserve Overall in the pre-sale show judged by Mr. Illingworth. Commenting the judge said: “There was a good level standard of bulls shown and my Junior Champion was very well-grown, wide with scale and power – a bull who will really go on.” At the corresponding sale last November, Messrs Greed had snapped up the Junior and Overall Championship awards. Here, their four bulls grossed £15,015 to round off a good day’s trading.
