South Eastern Limousin Cattle Club
Club Report 2006
The South East Limousin Cattle Club started the year with the AGM, held at the Blue Anchor, Bindley Heath. The Chairman and Secretary for 2005, Brian and Diane Baker, stood down this year and were replaced by John Reynolds and Karen Whiting, our thanks go to Brian and Diane for all their work over during the previous year.
2006 continued with our two herd competitions, Pedigree Limousins and for the third year, our successful Commercial competition, which attracted over 10 entrants.
The Pedigree Competition was judged by Mr Mark Quick, who kindly travelled from Devon to judge for us this summer, he covered our area in 3 days, and was very pleased with the Limousin cattle he saw. Our thanks go to Mark and his wife for judging, and Jonathan Stacey and Mrs Davis for hosting them overnight.
The Commercial Competition was kindly judged by Mr Geoff Brain, who was very impressed by the standard of cattle throughout his tour of the South of England.
Thank you to all the herds that took part in the competitions, the more herds we can attract the better the competitions are! This year’s winners were Buriton Estates for Overall Pedigree Herd and MA Piper & Sons for the Overall Commercial Herd.
The Annual BBQ and awards presentation for the competitions was this year hosted by MA Piper & Sons, with a farm walk and tour of his butchers shop also included, this was an excellent way to start the evening, and was well attended by many members of the SELCC
The show season started well for the South East this year, beginning with Heathfield show, despite the mud! Thorndean Farms won a selection of prizes with Quaish Volcano – Best Male in Breed, Breed Champion and Supreme Beef Champion, Sue Watson also had success with her cow Fenrose Nita, winning Reserve Breed Female.
The South of England Show saw Buriton Estates taking Reserve Champion with their heifer Miscombe Vanthe, and also Junior Champion with Miscombe Ava.
The New Forest and Hampshire show, as a great success for the South East, Buriton Estates took the Inter-Breed Reserve Champion with Miscombe Vanthe.
Miscombe Vanthe, also came out Inter-Breed Champion at the Kent County Show, with Thorndean Farms taking the Reserve Champion Limousin with Quaish Volcano, who went on to gain a second place at the Royal Show 2006
The Limousin also took reserve Inter-Breed Group at Kent, only being slightly beaten by the Holsteins!
Buriton Estates came out with red rosettes again at the Edenbridge and Oxted show this year with Miscombe Vanthe winning Champion Limousin, Inter-Breed Female Champion and Overall Inter-Breed Champion. Reserve Champion Limousin also went to a South East member, Thorndean At Last, with Thorndean’s Quaish Volcano taking Male Champion.
The Newbury Show was a great success for Thorndean Farms this year; Sue Watson won the Commercial Championship Beef title with Ada, a pedigree Limousin from her Organic Limousin herd in Sussex, shown by stockman Ben Maskell.
The summer continued for the South East Limousin Cattle Club with a Farm Walk hosted by kind permission of Buriton Estates. We all enjoyed a lovely afternoon in September, taking a tour of the excellent cattle that Buriton have produced, our thanks go to John and Mary Reynolds for the afternoon, which was well attended by all cattle breeders, and also Aled Edward the society chairman.
All the shows, this summer were well attended by South East members, both large and small herds. Lydden Court Limousins our smallest herd, won the 2003 born heifer class at Kent Show this year with Invicta Ulmaire, well done to Andrew and Anita Head.
The winter shows were also successful in 2006 for the South East the Hailsham Primestock Show this year was won by Thorndean Farms, with a pedigree Limousin Heifer, which sold for £3.10kg, after gaining the Championship Heifer prize.
Even The Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair this year, despite the distance, had some of the South East Members in attendance, Tottingworth Farms, with Sarah and Jason Wareham came back with a good selection of rosettes this year – not necessarily for Limousin cattle but well done anyway!
Once again, the South East Limousin Cattle Club would like to say a big thank you to all the members, and committee for all their hard work during the year, and we hope that you all have a successful 2007.
