The year started with our AGM held in February at the Plough Inn, Llandeilo. Joyce Gethin concluded her two years as Chairman and was replaced by Nigel Phillips with the rest of the officers remaining the same.
The Spring Show & Sale at Brecon with McCartneys was again very successful for Club members with the auction centre proving to be popular with both vendors and purchasers.
July saw Club members out in force at the Royal Welsh Show with many taking home prizes. A drinks reception and prize giving was held on the Monday night and was enjoyed by everybody present.
In August we held our ‘Stars of the Future’ show in conjunction with Brecon County Show. The judge was Vicky Maynard and the Champion was Tynewydd Flash from Gareth Jenkins and Rebecca Ayres.
Also in August some of our members were surprised to find themselves featured on the BBC programme Countryfile when they filmed at Monmouthshire Show. Terry & Sheila Jones of the Sherry Herd were filmed preparing their cattle with the help of TV presenter Claire Balding. They then filmed the classes where the Joneses won the Breed Championship and Reserve Interbreed with Sherry Fraggle. The judge for the show was Eric Gethin, also one of our members, who was interviewed and asked to explain what he looked for when judging.
In September we held our herd competition, this year judged by William Cowx, Hudscales Herd. We then welcomed William and his wife Judith back to our dinner in November, held at the Plough Inn, Llandeilo where we were entertained by the judge’s descriptions of how he remembered who we were!
The Autumn Show & Sale at Brecon in November once more proved successful for vendors from South Wales with the Champion selling for 9,000gns for Dai Brute. The sale of females was very strong with 35 heifers averaging £1,743 with a total clearance.
The year finished off with the Welsh Winter Fair with many members in attendance and Limousin-sired cattle once again dominated the awards.
