The eagerly awaited annual show and sale of Show Potential Cattle on behalf of the North Wales Potentials was held on Saturday 24 February 2018 at Ruthin Mart.

The event has a reputation of producing regular winners of shows around the UK during the year and with this in mind the sale attracted a strong crowd of perspective buyers from the length and breadth of the country.

Judges Mr Aled Roberts of Anglesey and Mr Eddie Morgan of Llandovery had some quality cattle to inspect in the pre-sale show.

The day turned out well for Dai Brute, who runs the Brutus Limousin herd in Brecon, as he was amongst the prizes. His nine-month old Limousin Brutus Top Man was tapped out as Champion Steer and then Overall Reserve Champion. By Brutus Cracker, Top Man sold to the Judge Aled Roberts for £2,800. The Reserve Champion Steer was another Limousin cross. This one was from local breeder Tecwyn Jones and went onto sell for £1,700. Tecwyn runs the Seisiog Limousin herd at Ty Newydd, Nebo.

The Judges settled on a nine-month old Limousin cross heifer, Brutus Naughty But Nice, a Cwmlimo Hercules daughter from Dai as their winning Limousin sired heifer and Reserve Heifer Champion. The smart heifer, went onto make £3,100 in the post-show sale in selling to Blair Dufton, Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Standing second to Naughty But Nice in her show class was a tidy heifer from Mr D Hughes, Corwen. The seven-month heifer, bred by a Asterix Limousin bull purchased from Mr Berwyn Hughes, was bought by Sarah Jane Leighton for £2,900.

A stylish Limousin heifer, Jets Little Gem, from P J & T A Jones who run the Tyisaf herd in Builth Wells took the honours in the Future Showman Heifer class. This four-month old heifer then went onto make £3,250 in the sale selling to Phil & Sharon Sellars, Lincolnshire for the second highest price on the day.

Another pure Limousin steer, by Forever Brill from Tecwyn Jones, Llanrwst which was shown by Dylan Jones, won the Future Showman Steer class. This steer sold to Gareth Taylor, Holyhead for £1,700.

The unhaltered champion was a 10-month-old pure Limousin steer by Liscon Bigshow from Bowen and Bowen, Welshpool. This steer sold for £2,150 to Backmuir Livestock, Keith, Aberdeenshire.
