Exploring the Lessons of Johne’s Disease in Cattle – Spring / Summer 2013, Final Meeting.

A final event for livestock farmers has been planned to present the findings to date of a research project seeking the best way to address Johne’s Disease or paratuberculosis in Scotland’s cattle. The PARABAN project team has worked with “champion farmers” and their vets to help progress their fight against what is a complicated and difficult disease.
The final PARABAN event will take place in collaboration with Glenbervie Farm, a beef farm which has been involved in the project since its inception.
The project began in 2010 when researchers from Scotland’s Rural College, the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, and the James Hutton Institute began work with farmers and their vets to identify the best way to control Johne’s disease in Scottish conditions. The resulting PARABAN farmers’ meetings have been held over 2012 / 2013 and have offered an informal forum allowing farmers, vets and researchers to openly discuss the challenges they face when controlling this disease.
The Glenbervie event, as the final meeting, will summarise and present results on a case study basis of all the farms involved in the project with particular reference to today’s host farm. The meeting will summarise conclusions that can be drawn from three years of intensive testing of blood and faeces from cattle, abattoir sampling and analysis of the environment around the study farms, and highlight key messages that the researchers would like to promote. Farmers will hear how this intensive research programme has built a picture of Johne’s disease on these farms and given us a greater understanding of how the disease exists in Scotland. It is hoped the audience will also use the opportunity to discuss the impact of Johne’s on their own businesses, to offer their own ideas and quiz the expert panel about Johne’s control.
